If you're playing old skool games, a 32 bit processor will do just fine. If you're playing the latest and "greatest" games, then it may help to get a 64 bit processor.
Some programs, though, can only run on 32 bit processors though, so there may be compatibility issues.
I'm sure there'll be others that are more knowledgeable on this stuff than me that'll better fill you in though. :)

The big advantage to using 64bit version of windows is the ability to handle more than 3 gigs of ram.
The problem with 64 bit version of windows is incompatibility issues with software and some games. This can be annoying but their is usually a way around it.

Just install Vista x64 and be done with it.
I've used XP x64 and Vista x64 without any problems.

I have Vista 64bit installed with 8GB of RAM and it runs just fine for me and runs all my 32bit apps just fine too. Most of my apps are in 32bit and when installing them, Vista will just put them into the 86x Program Files folder. As for games go, the only game I play is Unreal Tournament 3, and that runs just fine on my 64 bit system as well.

I am running Vista Ultimate 64-bit with 4 GB Ram, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400 processors, and 5 TB's HD room. I have had a couple of snags, but the advantages far outweigh any disadvantages it may have, and they are getting fewer and fewer everyday. It is the way things are going and will only get better. I highly recommend 64 bit.
