I have an Acer Aspire M5100 desktop. It says it's capable to go up to 8GB of RAM. I just got in the mail 4 2GB Kingston RAM sticks... I popped all 4 in and when I turn on the computer, it just beeps at me over and over.. it wont even get to a bootup screen.
EDITED
Found what I needed. My processor doesn't support the kind of RAM I bought! It only supports 667Mhz

Glad things worked out, it was a very suspenseful, on the edge of my seat real nail biter there for a minute.

lol yeah, yeah, I know... Read before buying. I lost $8.81 to return the RAM to get the correct kind ;-)

I was told by a computer expert that Vista will say you are running more than 3GB of memory. you might want to look that up, but it's possible you may have wasted your money on those sticks, but don't quote me on that. I was just told that Vista cannot support more than 3 gigs of RAM.

What does that mean? I'm running 8 gigs on my Vista machine.

Since I'm, by far, not an expert on this, I think I'll let this seemingly thorough article explain it:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605/en-us
Unless there was a fix for this since then, it probably remains true that Vista only supports 3GB or RAM.
Edit: So really, if you want to run more than 3GB of RAM, it's probably doable on a Linux box.

Vista was not reporting more than 3 gigs of RAM and it was fixed with SP1.

Your computer expert must not have told you, that as long as you have Vista 64-bit, you can go past 3GB of RAM ;-)

That's what I was thinking until I read this:
APPLIES TO
* Windows Vista Business
* Windows Vista Enterprise
* Windows Vista Home Basic
* Windows Vista Home Premium
* Windows Vista Starter
* Windows Vista Ultimate
* Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit Edition
* Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit Edition
* Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Edition
* Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit Edition
* Windows Vista Business 64-bit Edition
Now I'm a little confused. If this issue doesn't apply to 64 bit machines, then why are all the 64 bit Vista's included in the 'applies to' section. My only guess is that it applies to those machines even though they aren't affected, but it's still confusing as to why they even added those OS to thatr list.:icon_scra

Yeah, I'm not sure why either. But just last night I had 6GB in my dekstop, and my computer was reading it just fine... so maybe that is outdated or something.

One more time people.
SP1 fixed the issue of incorrect reporting of installed RAM in Vista.

I think you read the article wrong. VISTA NEEDS the minimal of 3gb of ram. =)
