With allot of people posting music on the boards, I thought it was about time to designate a thread for legal, free music finds. This is not a place to post restricted copyrighted work, and preferably revolve around open licensed music. If others want to post music, please indicate the genre, band name and download link.

Lately I've been getting more and more into creative commons and Open source music. This has actually started to become one of my main avenues for music. As I come across the gems, I'll post them here for all of you to enjoy. My way to contribute to the movement, and also a form of active protest against the current industry.

Also, this is something I noticed with indie music. There is a strong sense of community and a love of music and experimentation that seems lost on the commercial industry. There is also less abundance of overenthusiastic loudness.

Cool thread! :icon_thum

I think one of the main reasons for less loud music is simply because a lot of artists (typically unsigned artists) don't have the ability to compress music quite like the major record labels. There is compression out there, but I haven't really come across much that would make the music compress so much, that it's pretty much a brick on wave analysis like you see on the latest Metallica album (I've seen screen shots)

That's not to say compression is all bad. I've talked to someone who's been in the music business for about 40 years and he tells me that the main reason why compression is good is because uncompressed music tends to wreck sub-woofers and other stereo equipment. How that happens is an uncompressed percussion pushes the material forward at such a pace, that it scratches other parts of the stereo. I personally haven't used sound equipment, but it does make sense.

Still, compression isn't all that great either, just Google "loudness war"

I use to think that uncompressed music was the only way to go, but there was a tendency for a particular combination of sound to almost randomly peak, so I introduce a little bit of compression to prevent that (while not allowing distortion naturally)

As you mention, it's increasingly easy to get in to CC licensed material. It's been one of my main sources of music these days

Anyway, I had a radio show at one point and I noticed there were definitely a number of popular CC licensed songs I played, so I'll post as I think of them:

Artist: Cerebyss
Genre: Electronica (nothing specific)
Song: Deception

Edit: Oh yeah, and, of course, feel free to check out my music productions while we are at it (http://web.unbc.ca/~johnso9/music) :D

I think X0-000 is better off producing original compositions personally. Almost every original song that I've heard has been gold. :)

Nice contributions Drew. Never knew Newgrounds had music, I'll have to check it out.

Edit: Love the Newgrounds visualizations.

Ditto. :D

Newgrounds has some great visuals and seems to be extremely supportive of music even if some don't know it's there. Huge repository of music of pretty much any genre.

There's actually a surprising number of free and legal indie sources out there - many of which have a huge archive of music.

Here's another set:

Artist: Zale
Genre: Trance
Song: Marooned

http://www.artistserver.com/angelotelidis (I think you have to register to download, but you don't have to be a member to stream)

If you don't like to register to the above, one of his songs is available ton Soundclick:

Artist: Zale
Genre: Trance
Song: Strefanos Beach

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=481937&songID=5913127

I have yet to be disappointed with him personally. :)

Very nice. I might have to include that in my 2008 release pack. :)

Here's another one. Nice aqnd uplifting:

Artist: DjBjra
Genre: Video Game Music (pffft, that's trance if I ever heard it! :P )
Song: Caverns of Time

http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/181884

Clearly using a lot of ideas from trance music already in existance. The beginning was clearly taken (well, replayed) from "Vision84 - Highway Central (Nitrous Oxide Remix)" not sure about the pad, may have been the same song though. Still, the artist took a lot of existing ideas and made a very nice original out of them all.

Ya, I've been busy with studying, haven't had much time for browsing creative works. Hopefully I'll have more time once I'm done my finals.

Last track was sweet btw

Yeah, I thought the song was great. :)

I'm quite busy myself, but I thought I'd better bump the thread or it'll wind up not on the first page.

This is one style of music that is beyond me. I haven't honestly figured out how to synthesize this kind of sound yet.

Edit: Then again, I haven't taken a look at this soundfont file yet (http://www.zophar.net/utilities/soundfont/nes-soundfontqp.html).

The purpose of the thread is to find specific artsts/songs, not entire databases. It's easy to point to huge cache's worth of music, but digging through for specific things is a little bit more of a challenge (though quite achievable)

Shitty deal. Although if it was half decent you could probably still recover the file with recovery software.
