docs.google.com

Google Docs accepts most popular file formats, including DOC, XLS, ODT, ODS, RTF, CSV, PPT, etc. So go ahead and upload your existing files.

OpenOffice is most definitely the best alternative to word, and its free.

Yes any software can be obtained free of charge, but there is something about not having to rely on Microsoft for a word processor that appeals to me. The more open source apps I get used to using, the closer I get to using Unix based OS.

I prefer Openoffice. It's easy and free, not like Word 2007, only for advanced users!
