LONDON - The cockpit must be completely airtight, the wheels constructed of solid titanium and the driver's nerves made of steel.

A team of British engineers on Thursday announced plans to shatter the world's land speed record by creating a car that can travel over 1,600 kilometre an hour - more than 350 km/h faster than the record they set in 1997.

The man tapped to sit behind the wheel is Wing Cmdr. Andy Green, an RAF fighter pilot who steered their "Thrust' supersonic car" across Nevada's Blackrock Desert to its record-setting success in 1997.

That run, which reached a speed of 1,228 km/h, is still the world record and made the car the first land vehicle to officially break the sound barrier,
