I know the requirements. But when you have all the patches installed on first edition what's the difference with 2nd? I think it's one of microsoft's marketing tricks to force you to upgrade the OS. I can't go xp since I'll be having big trouble finding drivers for my old hardware.

they acually stopped supporting it already this year. And I am sure there are more differences than just the patches from the Windows update site on 98SE. So you are stuck my friend unless you upgrade.

god! i knew theyd stopped support for 95 but i dint think theyd stopped 98! is that just 98 or 98se as well?
i dont think theres actually any difference between 98 + patches and 98se. 98se is like winxp sp1 i think.

if you relly want to, or must- whichever it is, use win98 forsome reason I truly do not understand why you'd use that p.o.s. fe.... that is an OS that truly deserves to be dragged out in the street and brutally shot a dozen times at point blank range.
at least.... thats what I think of it. one of the holiest, most corrupted. operating systems ever.

I was just saying, I dont knowwhy you would willingly use first edition.... thats all.

perfect and windows 98 (particularly first edition) are two things I would never use in a sentence together... unless I was joking or posting as I am now.
I do know what Im doing, enough to know that the win98 fe disk I have sitting in my closet isnt worth the ink (I know they use lasers) it took to print the front of it.
that is just my opinion, something we are all entitled to. right dealie?

the biggest problem i have with 98SE is that it is a memory pig.

gorphon - watch it with the lasers, CCSDUDE will show up.
The Hunter - it may be a memory hog, if you do not own much ram, and it damn well doesnt "release" it well when an app no longer needs it. Now that you're running much more lean and clean, you should have plenty more free for apps to frolick in, and less paging to the hard drive. (all those damned sticky post-its)
Dealie - you too are correct, and if you will use System Monitor, go to Edit, then Add Item, then Memory, then select "Unused Physical Memory" you will be able to see how much free ram you have at any one time! ( I did this in my head, verify it , i may have missed a step )
Finally, ihos . . . . . ihos what are you thinking? WMP9 was in no way built for W98, let alone first addition. Its not a trick to FORCE you to upgrade your O/S, christ man, you dont buy a '78 Plymouth, and then show up at the dealership and complain to them, that you cant get those free leather seat options !
Either get with the times, or stay in the past, but you cant have the best of both worlds.

WMP9 can be installed on Win98SE. You had better read the posts more carefully next time.
Btw, I don't know how to thank you all for not helping and instead ranting about the outdated os I'm stuck with.

I agree. It seemed as though the last few posts turned into Win98 bashing. If you really wan't to use WMP9, and it works with SE, then just upgrade to Win98SE. Or, if you have time(if you can), upgrade to XP, but I believe you have to do some things first such as converting the file system to NTFS from FAT32. I could be wrong, on many and all fronts. Oh well, that was my useless brain vomit for the day.

I was emphasizing the fact that first edition was not equiped to handle it. Its not. Foreverboard told you the requirements, but you didnt like that. Instead, you had to argue the differences in O/S between first and second editions, and patches.
It's nearly impossible to write a program thats optimized for ALL O/S, especially one like WMP9. Considerations such as shell integration and DX, multi-threading, and memory management are just a few.
I read your post, did you read any of the threads about how WMP9 was a still a POS? Must have missed that one.
Just because you possibly COULD do something, which you cant, doesnt mean its a good idea. Don't cop an attitude when youre the one that isnt willing to hunt drivers for your system and upgrade or even upgrade to W98SE. I stand by my analology, and in the future when you want advice on how to do the next to impossble, I for one will not waste your time.

If your smart you wouldnt even touch WMP9 that program is evil.Just agreeing to the EULA allows people to hack your pc and remove copyright material if they think you are miss using it (i.e. P2P applications).

i agree with crazytrain, just because its made by microsoft doesn't mean you have to use it. i use winamp 2.x as my primary media player. if your system can support winamp 3.x then id go for that.

...
Krell, cut down on caffeine man. I didn't ask if media player is good or bad. I just wanted to know if there was a way to install it on my os. Why I want the bloody thing is my business. You come up flaming me for owning an old OS as if it is my crime. I would have upgraded if I could so don't tell me that I just can't be arsed to find drivers.
And once again, pay more attention to the posts!
