Other then disabling active scripting, What's your favorite pop-up killing software?

Just download Mozilla, it has a built-in Pop-Up Stopper, The New Netscape (7.01) has one too, but I've never been a big fan of Netscape. If You don't wanna download a new broswer (or don't have the space for it) then just get EMS FreeSurfer Mk II It works with IE 5x and above, and Netscape 4.7 and above.

I agree, I have used several popup killers and popupcop is by far the best, the only thing that bothers me is that it only works with IE, and not with opera or mozilla (tho this has a built in one).

I'm a great fan of the Proxomitron, in fact I like it so much that I've given it the privilege to sit in my Startup folder. It's much more than a popup stopper, it's a proxy server sitting between your web browser and the internet. It's highly configurable, and lets you control every aspect of a web page. It lets you kill banners, Java applets, JavaScript, Flash animation, backgrounds, sounds, counters - heck, anything you want.

Webwasher is my favorite. Gives you lots of control over exactly what is filtered. It kills embedded music, animated gif's, banners, pop-ups, no-right-click scripts, all that crap. Then, I add "doubleclick.net" and "fastclick.net" to IE's restricted sites list, that kills popups on a couple of sites that won't work quite right with WebWasher. Oh, and of course I use DeadAim to kill ads on AIM, and Messenger Plus to kill ads in MSN Messenger. Byebye ads!!!

I used to use this a while ago, worked awesome for me, glad to see its still available, I know for a while they talked about getting rid of it

the one thing I didnt like, was that it blocked windows update, so I had to disable the proxy, then do update, then re-enable it

get it at http://www.proxomitron.org/

it also comes in a couple of languages :)

EDIT: I just tried the program, works great, blocked everything at ZP, took me about 15min to setup (I went through every option to see what it did and if I wanted it checked), it seems to work great, not too many conflicts so far, only my own stupidity

one other small popup killer, if you use the google toolbar, one of the expiremental features supress's javascript when leaving a page, it seems to block quite a few ads, go figure, google helped me :)

I use adshield. Not only does it block most pop-ups, but if you do get a pop-up, you can manually block it out any way you wan't(by server, directory on server, etc.). It will also let you do the same for any ad banner, even some flash animations.

just use Opera. The best browser and the first that had built-in pop up stopper. Use it for speed too.

The best one, for me of course!... also, using the modified HOST file that you can download from Kazza lite site( http://www.k-lite.tk ) helps alot(because you can just add new sites... HOHOHOHOHOHOHO!)

Google looks to be branching out.

Mozilla does a terrific job anout eliminating pop-ups. Unlike Opera, it has no ads, is standards compliant (Supports Magnet Links), skinable, stable, fast, feature packed and open source.

There's no question about it. If you're having trouble with pop-ups, you're using the wrong browser.

Go grab a copy of Mozilla FireBird. It's nice and simple. The options are well layed out with an easy click to stop pop-ups. When it suppresses one, an icon shows up in the bar that you can click on and allow the pop-up if you need it. How much more do you need?

Later,

I use Mozilla myself, but when I used IE, I used a little program called Click-Off. I liked this one because it only blocks the ad and not the page that's loading, activeX or java, etc. Some pop-up blockers will do just that, preventing some pages from loading properly. Also, Click-Off uses very little system resources.

Use Proxomitron, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty.

It's not in development anymore, to my knowledge, but it is by far the most configurable and excellent piece of software I've come across.

Forget pop-ups, this baby acts as a web-proxy and lets you selectively remove just about any component of a web-page you don't want. Pop-Ups / Referrals / Snooping Javascripts / Cookies ... it even lets fixed sized windows/frames become movable again.

Very good indeed.

Got to be the opera browser, you get the following options:

- accept pop-ups
- refuse pop-ups
- open pop-ups in background
- open reuqested pop-ups only

I leave it on the last option and never miss an important pop-up and never get any intrusive pop-up ads either. Perfect.

Opera's got all that too and much more, as well as being faster than IE.

Sounds good then, if you don't mind the occasional website not rendering correctly.

Still, Proxomitron gets my vote simply because it's a proxy that runs external to any browser you happen to be using.

This means that the filters apply to ANY program that attempts HTTP access, not just your browser.... and there are quite a few.

I use ZoneAlarm Pro, Popup Stopper Companion (www.panicware.com), AND the google search bar, all of which block popups.

I don't use Opera, because I do web development, and with 90+ percent of everyone using IE, it's more important to me that I use what most people use so I see and experience what most people do. Any of the three things I use to block popups work well. ZoneAlarm has the advantage of working regardless of what browser you use, obviously. And nothing says you must be limited to using ONE tool for the purpose - using several isn't a bad thing.

Ditto on the Mozilla. I've been using Firebird exclusively for a few months now and have completely forgotten what a pop-up looks like. Pure Bliss! :)

Paired with Thunderbird mail client and its stellar adaptive junk-mail filter, they make a killer combo. Keeping annoyances down to near-nil. :gj

I have a wife and two teenagers that do or use to do the same thing. There are a few preventative measures you can take...besides lecturing them. It may not stop them all, but it certainly can't hurt. You can try some of these programs here. (http://www.wilders.org/downloads.htm)
I have tried SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. SpywareGuard hasn't updated in a while though, which makes me wonder. I haven't tried BrowserHijacker Blaster either. You can read them over, and try them if you like. There's another one that I thought was interesting too, but haven't tried RegBlock (http://www.spywareguide.com/blockfile.php)

I must also add that other browsers are far less susceptible to these problems with IE.

Good Luck!

the one in opera is nice, but sometimes i couldn't open pop-ups when i did want them without pressing ctrl or something.
google toolbar is nice, but i still see the occasional pop-up.

the one in safari is by far the best. opens new windows when it needs to, hasn't allowed a single pop-up through.

The proxomitron gets my vote. Its simply the most advanced stopper you can get. It took me about half an hour of reading guides and tweaking, but now it stops pretty much whatever I want.

I'm with Alexander. I don't mind pop-ups. I hate and despise the ads inside of them. My hosts file stops just about every unwanted ad I don't want. Plus, I don't waste bandwidth, and I don't waste pop up stopper resources (yes, I'm that picky.)

I don't bother using a stand alone pop up killer.
I use Netskape navigator as my browser (as has been mentioned, this has a rather nifty built in popup killer), and I use ZoneAlarm 4 pro as my firewall, which also has popup, banner, cookie killing features.

i use mozilla firebird, and that works like a charm.

(EDIT: i didn't read the first post, but here's how to do it anyway.)
but if you still want to use IE...

Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level, Disable Active Scripting.

If you run into a site that is hurt by this setting, you can always add it to the trusted zone (the only site i have in my trusted zone is windows update...it needs scripting of course :) )

Use AdMuncher.

It's 160K, written in pure assembly language, and it's the only app I've tried that's knocked Proxomitron off the top-spot.

Ad Muncher is the one I use.

It isn't limited to any browser. Removes all ads and popups without damaging web pages.

It's the best. I use it along with Opera and together they make browsing a breeze.

The latest version of Ad Muncher now integrates into your browser so you can right click on images/links/frames to remove them without having to add them through the Ad Muncher interface.

http://www.admuncher.com/beta.pl?version=4.7&build=17353&key=173861843

Nothing can touch Ad Muncher's speed or feature set. :icon_sunn
