As a newbie to file sharing, I am blown away, with all the stuff that is out there. Kind of overwhelming at first.

Is P2P file sharing a legitamite hobby?

Two questions:

Some downloaded video files (WM) request to connect to a microsoft server to upgrade you to a unique indentifier, to be able to play the content. should I do this, or is there a way around it.

Second, I have noticed that the Kazza Lite theatre will not play some videos, but windows media player will play them, is this normal?

It depends....if Kazaa Lite is trying to play them through WMP 6.4 and the content is in WMP 8 format then yes it's normal....it won't play the newer content.

As for allowing it to "upgrade" DON'T do it....never do it....just use WMP 6.4 (open the run box from your start menu and type in "mplayer2" without the quotes) or pick up BSPlayer to view content....skip using Kazaa's "built" in feature too......

If you feel some great need to watch the file....you can maybe try installing the WMV encoder pack from MS then use ASFtool's to convert the file to AVI or WMV 7......thus removing all the unique ID crap encoded into the header of the original. NEVER, I REPEAT N E V E R get the Microsoft unique identifier... that is for DRM files (and who knows what they could do with a unique id with the p2p trading crackdowns and all). CCSDUDE they don't just ask you for the unique id on older WMP, they asked it on my friends WMP8 on his XP computer (and on my WMP7). You can get same quality files (most cases better quality files) that are not DRM.

Also, the reason why (I am pretty sure) KaZaA won't play some files is because they are divx or similar. Don't worry though, they will play when they are finished downloading.

EDIT: Also, nice new sig there CCSDUDE LOL. No offense but the first thing that popped in my mind when I looked at it closely was pedophile.

I agree with all your points on his/her problem. As for my sig it's supposed to be artistic! LOL It's like an odd way of telling "Chii's" story in Chobits....where her sister is part of her...thus the 2 exactly the same chickies on either side. One is "dark" Chii and the other is Chii, Dark Chii is looking out for Chii and blah blah blah well needless to say it's my sloppy attempt at a symbolic anime sig. I was getting sick of that blank faced one.

He said the file was in WV (I assume that's WMV) format sooo WMP crap popped up in my mind.
