Friends: Can someone suggest a free binary news server? I paid for subscription to Altbinz but has not been able to get a single download. Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of any. I've heard they exist, but are usually not that great unless your ISP still bundles it with your subscription (something that has increasingly been a thing of the past as the reality of a oligopoly sets in in many countries)

Best thing to do is either get different premium service or give sharity blogs/upload site search engines a go which is about as close to UseNet as you're going to get.

Alternatively, there's BitTorrent, eMule, Shareaza, and then Limewire.

That's the best I got.

Years ago I had a few good free servers, they seem to be a thing of the past now. Most free servers do not allow access to binaries at all. As said before, paid subscriptions are they only way I know of, but for only 10 bucks a month, its not a bad deal.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Appreciate. Just that I don't want to go throwing away money again unneccesarily

Well I have great access via torrents, and I still pay for an unlimited service. Its just soo cheap these days, and having the ability to dl anything on the newsgroups at max speeds is worth it IMO. Not having to upload things like dvdr and larger files is very convenient to me, especially with comcast starting their new bandwidth usage plan...
