:mellow Just wondering what loadqm.exe is? Also is it needed in 98se? Also what is the best way to check, and find out what is running? msconfig is a help, but I need to know if there is a program I can run to test , and find out what is running. Thanks in advance.

dont know if you checked it yet hinter... the first link on that search page is this: link (http://www.infopackets.com/freenewsarticles/loadqm.exe.htm) and is titles "another Microsoft disatrous jewel".... I just skimmed it but it does not look like a good thing to me my friend. says you can go to run and type in msconfig and safely remove it from your startup though....
edit: hunter! bad fingers! bad!

hell, Id move it out of its regular directory or put it on a disk (if small enough) as well as disabling it.... this is microsoft we're talking about (I AM NOT TRYING TO START A MICROSOFT DEBATE) and windows 98 has always had tons of problems.... and now I just learned about one more it seems.
"After weeding through debate on the discussion boards, the purpose of LOADQM.EXE is not clear. Some refer to the program as Microsoft's attempt to spy on you and report your every move to some sort of a central database system. The honest truth is that there is much speculation about what LOADQM.EXE really does."
anyone know enough about it to explain what it 'really does'?? I just might go exploring....
edit: damn, I need to stop doing this..... hunter, in regards to:
msconfig is a help, but I need to know if there is a program I can run to test , and find out what is running
I do not remember the name or where it was but rickio once posted a link to a program which does exactly what you describe as well as several other good utilities. if you or I cant find it I am sure he'd give it to you (us, Id like it too ; ) as soon as he is next online.

did you upgrade msn? or some software related to upgrading? if so it is like gorphon said and i disabled via msconfig also.
what software are you referring to gorphon?
I remember that file now and it is part of Micro$ofts efforts to keep tabs on you. Actually it has to do with loading msn faster but it seems to phone home to MS for some reason and no one has explained that. Just use msconfig to disable it.

ok that file came with the msn upgrade and you can safely disable it and things will work. I myself disabled it before.
that file has not been explained by microsoft to my satisfaction. it just hogs resources and is not needed at bootup.

:wings Ricko, you have that right, I can see a big difference now. It will take a while, but I will cut back on the running processes on this machine. That was a refference to Mr. Gates, and Windoze in that pic about picking things up. Thanks guys.

yeah, I just readsome more on it.... microsoft's site says its needed for autoupdate and the "global drizzle service" but does not make it clear if it is for msn, all MS products or what... just that it is installed with MSN. annd the way they describe to disable it.... they go out of their way to make it difficult for a computer beginner.... just one more thing that makes me say hmmm.... regarding MS.
check it out, they dont even mention using msconfig, that would be too easy: microsoft loadqm page (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q309418)
and rickio, I was talkiong about a few links to sites you posted.... regarding a process manager, anti virus progs, various utilities, etc.... It was awhile back now (over a year perhaps) but had some great free progs in it. the process manager specifically.... I remember you saying that it gave more info and allowed you more control then the task manager generally does.
edit: I will check majorgeeks.com, they tend to hoard things like that....

Oh , I gotcha gorphon..
yeah this process viewer is something you should have. As many processes are not even reported on taskmanger (alt,contrl,delete/otherwise known as 3 finger salute)
You can see what is running and kill it if you suspect something wrong. Often it is the only way to kill a unknown process.
Once killed you can research it and or delete it if needed.
also you can become familiar with what should be running and if something pops up you can clean and fix easier.
http://prcview.com it's freeware and very small application.

Here's a good little site to to find out what's running (or what could be running) on your system at start-up. From Virus to little known programs, you can find it here: Link (http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm)

surely the most annoying file: devldr16.exe
goddam creative! its a dos sound driver! we could jus run it when we wanted to run dos games etc. but noooooooo, it has to be difficult!
when u disable it in msconfig it jus gets re-enabled at startup. its a huge resource hog and does nothing for me! admittedly all i have to do is ctrl-alt-del then end the task, but its bluddy annoyin!
nebody know of a way to stop it runnin at startup???

I've got a utility that I use called Edit Startup Programs 1.01 by John D. Stanish
It simply allows you to disble, delete or re-enable startup apps. works like a charm.
found it here it is:
http://www.johndstanish.com/software/index.php?title=StartupEditor
their are other apps but this is small and simply works fine.
oh here is a new application that you might prefer.
