I've often used MediaCoder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/), its handles many formats and is OpenSource. I've also heard good things about Super (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html). There have been some report of possible spyware or a trojan in super, so you may want to avoid it, its up to you. Other than those, there are some commercial software but thats just a waste of money.

For video, I actually like Cucusoft's product enough that I would almost pay for it. Oh...and Magic DVD Ripper is very good, too.
For audio, MediaMonkey (free) is very good.

I seriously hope you are joking, anyone who spams as much as they do don't deserve any publicity.
Also for audio you can use foobar (http://www.foobar2000.org/) which works quite well.

If you're looking for a professional software and the cost is not an issue, then you want to look at
Autodesk Cleaner XL (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=5562182)

I still use winavi to convert mov and avi files to DVD. The new versions are slower but the quality is very high

Didn't expect Autodesk to have a video converter. It makes sense considering its probably just selling a extension of their CAD or 3d animation software, but its still strange to see them associated with the video conversion sector.

I learned about that one recently!
The GUI is kind of weird but it does the job and converts all kind of video, audio and pics.

For audio: foobar2000
For video: avidemux, virtualdub
All of the above: ffmpeg (I only use this in Linux)
All work beautifully for my purposes.

Use Apex Video Converter Pro for video conversion. For audio conversion use FlexiMusic Audio Convertor (http://www.fleximusic.com/). You can create music mixing projects and the software provides different settings for different audio formats user can easily handle the software without any help.
