My Phillips DVP642 stand-alone DiVX/DVD player has died. It was a long and fruitful relationship but it's time to move on.

What's the coolest DiVX/DVD/whatever stand alone out there now?

No blah blah about NAS or streaming boxes.. not interested.

Phillips is still king as far as I'm concerned. Try the new ones with progressive scan and USB input. I own 2 and they cost me 60 bucks each.

You can get new ones that have UPCONERSION to 1080p.. and You can use a thumb drive in them for jpeg and others but i dont think you watch movies as of yet. Search on pricegrabber.com or pricescan.com .. Even www.techbargains.com can find you a great deal.

I just got that one from costco and it does kick ass. I havnt played too many divx items in it, but the USB is awesome. Ive been sticking all sorts of crap on that, its it works every time. there even is a feature for changing the audio offset for if the audio is out of sync.

Its time to stop buying DVD players all together and skip that outdated notion. Buy a device that will use your externals to play your movies and music and stop burning all those wasteful and bothersome DVD's.

Agree with the sentiment but a dvd/divx player with USB host is a decent cheap option for those who still enjoy having physical media, or have a pc free room they want to watch media in . The only bummer is converting 250Gb's of p**n on an external to DIVX so itll play through it, not that I would know or anything, it was my friend im talking about :icon_thum

Theres another upside..

Kids still get DVDs at birthdays etc from relatives, they can watch em on the player and when they trot off to bed the player can use the USB host to import whatever media the grown ups want to watch...

It keeps the little ones away from the main network or back up drives so they dont encounter unsuitable material, anything thats on physical media is child friendly, anything that is not lives digitally on a backup drive thats removed

What do you mean y USB hosts? DO you mean use both kinds of storage? If a person has to for kids and such then of course...go for it.

As the TV standard changes over most people will not be as happy with DVD media. Since I got a Hi Def monitor my attitude has changed. I use to think DVD's were good enough forever. But when I play DVD's on my Hi Def set I can see how low def they truly are. When I play DVDs on my regular TV set I can't see this problem but then I notice how blurry the media is, its like looking at an old VHS tape once you get use to hi def images. Hi Def movies are absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!! Its sorta funny being able to see all the make-up actors have on their faces. lol



DVD Divx players have lots of life left in them but I am thinking of the future trends. Just like CD's still have a purpose, DVDs will have purposes and beinfits too but I think more and more people will be switching to flash drives and Hard drive solutions in the next few years.

Here (UK) a player with USB host is now fairly low end standard and it will play the same format files as the Player can read off of DVD- so a stick or external HD with DIVX format will play through the player with no other hardware- but in the same resolution and upscaling is pants- and I agree its a fairly low bar - so yes as you point out resolution is an issue

You are 100% right that for high end applications and probably now even mid range physical media is dead in the water. Blu Ray whilst a nice improvement is like SVHS, basically the standard was defined after the death of the media it standardised.

Going forward its probably going to a scenario lie robert heinlan predicted, your house has a data core that stores what you need and you take it with when you move. Resoluution and sound uality limited only by capacity of the core..

This all links back to the RIAA MPAA debate, physical media has its uses (control of access) but the control is physical- denying access to media denies access to the content..in the real world its only a matter of time before the kids circumvent my digital locks, so physical removal of the media is the best option-Im kind of like them in that respect

As we move towards solid state backup this process will accelerate. With the new IP standard coming in its perfectly ppossible every solid state device will have an individual IP and will be always on through RFID, Bluetooth or whatever and there will be no where to hide my movies

They will not play many file formats and Hi Def content is out of the question.

BTW, as you stated too, upscaling DVD content is almost worthless. Its just makes the flaws more noticeable and does not and can not improve the looks of the DVD. Its like looking at a movie in a small window on your PC and then looking at it full screen. Its not gonna look good.

Good deal. Make sure the file systems match up. That would be my main concern. That seems to be a good unit. I wonder what codecs it supports and I also would like to know it it supports true HD play back. Looks like a nice unit!

I have to admit im not sure about the true HD play back as i do not have an HD TV. However, i do believe that most codes are supported, i haven't found one yet that i cannot play. It is after all divx ultra certified. it will even play WMV's It is a great unit, and for $50 from Costco, it's worth the test to see if it is worth your while. (even if you dont have a costco membership, it's about $65 at Best Buy)
