Hey all, i have researched into this problem and i am definately not alone.
When i boot up, the little icon of two monitors is there, but not the little earth ( as in the symbol that verifies you are successfully connected to internet). Now, it does say i am connected to my network, but it says when i open mozilla FF that connection times out.
So i do what anyone who knows a bit about networking would do, i "repair" the connection.
It gives me a list of what to do usually:
reset DCHP or something
automatically detect ip or something haha
and Reset local area network adapter ------ This one always works
OR sometimes, as in once in a blue moon, disabling and re-enabling works
so i do know how to connect, but i have to do this EVERYTIME i boot-up
usually taking about 5 minutes. Now i can cope, but it is a very big hastle
Can anyone thing of something to try?
and yes i have tried all of the obvious things.
thanks alot folks

G'day dis4bled,
Hmmm....errr......welcome back !????!!
Just for starters
Click on the two moniters icon.
Then click on what your currently connected too.
Then a window explorer box will pop up, headed Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center.
Now select 'View status'. Another pop up box headed 'Local Area Connection Status'.
Click on 'Properties'. Another pop box headed 'Local Area Connection Properties'.
Now click on 'Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)' then click on 'Propertes'.
Select 'Obtain an IPv6 address automatically' and check the DNS server the same setting. Click OK.
Now do the last two steps for 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
If this does not help. What modem and router (if any) are you using and connection. Cable, wireless, boardband, dialup ?

thank for for responding, and yes i cant really explain why i was gone...you know how busy life gets im sure.
anyway, i am using 100mbps connection, with the dlink wireless modem/router but i am using cable, not wireless
and i have tried it on 2 different internet connections...my mothers house and mine, and same deal *note i have not had this problem before vista.
i tried what you said, and they are both already set to obtain automatically.
thanks!

Do you have any machines that can connect. Just wondering if its an isp issue rather than a Vista issue. Maybe try a Linux boot disc and see if that connects.

i can connect, internet works im on it right now
what the problem is, is that whenever i boot up it doesnt properly connect to the internet
i have to "Diagnose and Repair" a few times and use every option they tell me for it to work
its just a silly hastle that should be avoided?

Hmmm strange, did you try updating windows and your drivers? Updating the firmware of the router?

the drivers were all updated yes, im not sure about the firmware of the router? didnt know there was such a thing haha
and could it be that its 64bit vista? maybe some bugs, and im running ultimate edition if that does anything network wise..
and just to mention, the only "diagnose & repair" option that fixes it, is Reset Local Area Network adapter.
ps. how can i get more rep points, i want to be in the trading invites for private torrents but only have 5 points and need 10

All strange !
I have 32bit and Home Basic. I run Belkin modem via cable at home and at work wireless through ???? forget. I think its DLink router and Belkin modem.
Both connect automatically.
Is there a setup steps for the dlink like the belkin. With Belkin modem, I opened my IE typed in address 10.1.1.1 hit enter. Then enter its username and password that come with the modem. Then I enter in my email and password.
Also have you followed the vista wizard correctly to connect to the internet.
This link may help. http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/

thank you for the responses...
see the problem is definately not the router, or how it is setup - there are other computers on the network that work just fine.
i have tried my computer at 2 different houses *completely different routers/modems* and same problem persists

Hi. A couple of things you could try. Open task manager, click services tab and check to see if 'dhcp client' and 'dns client' are running. If they aren't then enable them. Then open command prompt with admin rights and type "ipconfig /flushdns" without quotations. These steps will not harm your pc.

Should read "ipconfig /flushdns" without quotations.
