i want to start my own torrent site. i got it up and running live 2 days ago, and fixed all errors/bugs i could find yesterday.
so now i think i'm ready for the (imo)hard part, getting people to join. so i was wondering what you guys look for in a torrent site, features you like/want (better if noone has done it before, i'm always up for a challenge), etc. i am planning on having it open for reg whenever it is under 2k users, then it goes invite only. is this a good plan, or should it be always open/always closed, or is the numer too high/low?
i was also wondering how i could get the word around.

Unless you have something special to offer, I wouldn't bother. There are far too many general sites already. If you have something special to give, like dedicated hard to find content, then people will find you to signup.

as toker said. unique content is important. i already have all the 0day / general trackers that i need. features: when opening a new tracker. an upload bonus and / or free leech is something i look for. a bonus system is also a good feature. these are only things i care about until the tracker becomes self sustainable.
your plan is good as a prelim plan. it's not really about the number of users you have. it's more about how active your users are.
getting the word around is fairly easy. post it on whichever sites are dedicated to filesharing and trackers. there's also sites like btracs which can be used to get the word out.
anything further would be through word of mouth.

Thanks for the info. I already have bonus system and free leech, although I hadnt decided whether to specialize the site in something yet. I think I will though.
I have trouble finding FLAC torrents (or maybe its just my lack of accounts on the really good trackers :P), but right now I have to use a combination or TPB, STm, Demonoid, IPT, and Google to find an album in FLAC (even something like Hot Fuss by The Killers, I only found it on Demonoid >.>). Maybe I will go with that.
Thanks for the input ^_^

You also probably ought to look at the elevated level of risk you take running a tracker.
You won't be just one of millions of users anymore, you'll be a site owner with a bullseye on your back, which could have very real and lasting implications.
OinK, Elite Torrents, think it thru, in the event you get popped are you willing to take the flak to protect your users?
