Suppose I wanted to backup my DVDs. What program or bundle of programs should I use?
Of course this would be for backup purposes only...

Hawkburn,
Don't buy that program! They used freeware available on the internet then package them together to sell to you. Don't waste your money on it!

it really isnt worth doing it yourself, you can download one faster then you can convrt rip sync convert again, it is pretty much an overnight process or longer, takes ages. Just download the movies you already have if you want a "backup" of them

So after I download the .avi; what would the next step be? I am guessing converting to MPEG4 so that the DVD player can read it.
Thanks,
bobhss : PM's are clean. :-)

Use TMPGEnc and convert AVI to SVCD to watch on DVD player.
Sorry, I was using another program while I was making this post! Corrected the name of the program for converting of AVI to SVCD now.

this is a good question because a dowload and convert will take a long time to and have a lower quality.....i dont know if your actually using a dvd burner but if you are wouldnt it be possible just to extract all of the .vob files from the dvd( i think thats there extention) and then just take them and burn them to a DVD?...i know my dvd drive only takes 1/2 hour to rip those types of files from the DVD

After I do this do I need a DVD burner or will it work with a regular burner?

I can help with this you will only need a cd burner and 2-3 writables depending on movie lenght...and if nero holds true a VCD is supposedly like a music CD holding 80min to a 700mb disk
