View Full Version : Avira or NOD32?

Hi,

I'm currently stuck with the dated, unreliable and resource-hogging NAV 2005. I want something better. After going through AV Comparative's most recent reports, I've narrowed my choices down to Avira or NOD32 (with Kaspesky an option). Which would you suggest? I run Windows XP Home SP3 and Firefox 3 (I also use IE7 occasionally).

Is it possible to use either without paying? Kaspersky seems to be highly crack-resistant, since they regularly blacklist publicly-available serials. Are Avira and NOD32 similar?

Finally, if I run a good AV, is it really necessary to have a separate spyware/adware detector? I've never used one, it has never seemed to cause a problem.

Thanks for your help.

Molu

From the odd times I've used or come across nod32 I found it was a really good antivirus. Now I'm simply using avast but nod32 would be the first choice id make if I were to pay for antivirus softare. Never heard of Avira before so I don't have much to say about it. The little I read in wikipedia's entry didn't look too promising.

There are plenty of free AV's around that work great, and are updated very frequently, no need to pirate one..
If your going to pay, I would go for Kaspesky personally.

u may go for avira, it's free http://www.free-av.com/

also, kaspersky 6 months or 1 year trial serials are available on some sites (i know that sounds stupid but i've used it once, it works but hogs too much memory & its out now)

Everytime Avira updates, a popup-window with an ad shows up that you need to click away. It's especially annoying if you play games in fullscreen mode as this happens, as it switches back to the Windows desktop, but also if you are using any program.

This antivirus program is one of the best apparently, but even if it's free, its Shareware-like nagging that wants you to pay for the non-popup version is terribly annoying.

Has anyone here used both Avira and NOD32?

Any more opinions people? Also, will I need an Anti-Spyware if I run an AV? Thanks.

Some anti-viruses have antispyware now so it may not be as important as it used to be to have a separate app. Personally I just use windows defender for that seems to work just fine for me.

so many thread i read from different forum, 2 or more AV installed in one pc is not a nice idea

first = there will be a conflict in scanning= saving virus record in quarantine= booting problem etc.

second- surely, your pc will get slow :icon_cycl

Nod32 fails to concur with Kaspersky (consumes resources; messes up updates and often just fails to detect threats). Although Kaspersky is probably the best it might not suit your current needs, especially if you do not have powerful machine and totally legal software.

I suggest you trying out Avira AntiVir Personal 8.2.0.337 and if that does not satisfy you then you might like to get powerful machine, genuine software and buy legal Kaspersky (I think that would be ideal).

Download Avira AntiVir (http://www.filefactory.com/file/a041e0h/n/antivir_workstation_winu_en_h_EXE)

I' recommend Avast Pro beside Kaspersky. Also you might take a look at Malwarebytes" Anti malware.:icon_thum

I recommend no anti-virus whatsoever. If you have a brain and don't open suspicious email attachments and trojans disguised as keygens you won't need one.

You can get viruses by visiting the web, just browsing to infected websites gives you the virus. Also there has been a growing number of viruses finding their way into commercial products. So no matter what you need an A/V even if you are a genius. Although I must say 99% of the time I would not need one.

I don't think we should respond to any more of this asshole Sharehorse and his fraud spam. Every post he has nade is for a different program name but they all go to his fucking pay per site call the File Factory.

Sorry YWD, but FileFactory is just another file hosting place. There is a method of downloading the material for free if you're willing to wait a minute. It just may be that the man is an altruist and wants to help the people.

If that was the case then then he/she should show the link as their site rather then disguised as another comps. site. Free or not it is fraud.

now, I wouldn't say *that,* but it certainly is NOT trustworthy because he could have taken the install file from whatever program he's pimping, added a virus of some sort, and uploaded it to the file hosting site. It's not a trusted source at all!

You said it better then me. That was what I was implying .
With all the drive by viruses on the web this one was really questionable as well.
