I'm all for the discovery channel, anything on there is bound to be good.
History channel has some good ones too, but they are a bit dry most times.

If you guys like reefer madness, then check out "Grass". Its narrated by Woody Harrelson and has loads of archive footage (Also has a lot of reefer madness footage too).

Also, my very favourite documentary is: Capturing the Friedmans.

From IMDB:

In the 80's, in the upper-middleclass district of Great Neck, the awarded Professor Arnold Friedman is arrested for possession of some magazines of child pornography. A further investigation of the police discloses that apparently Arnold and his eighteen years old son Jesse molested his young students during their private computer class. Their Jewish family tears apart with the situation and the sentences of Arnold and Jesse.
...
The Friedmans used to document everything about their lives on camera. So you see a nice happy family, litterally get ripped apart from the inside out when the allergations come out.

Incredible documentary..

I have been watching parts of the When We Left Earth, its a documentary on NASA that Discovery has been running. The moon race part of the series is amazing to see what was going on at NASA.

I can't stand Micheal Moore's films, to me a documentary is suppose to document a story, not show clips and voice overs of the filmmaker's opinions. IMO it seems that his films are more about his agenda than the actual subject itself which doesn't seem like a true documentary to me. Yes I have watched some of a Micheal Moore film to see what the hype was about.

hi folks

how you all doing, well i hope?

i recently rewatched two very different and very good documentaries just recently that i would recommend (i watched them both on google video, i think, for free).

1) Crumb: about the infamous american underground comics legend with the bizarre upbringing that molded his warped view of the world and was responsible for some of american cultures most interesting and influencial artwork during the 60s, 70s and early 80s.

2) The Devil and Daniel Johnston: about the cult american singer/songwriter who started off as a chancer and then became a legend (after being championed by influencial bands of the 80s and 90s such as butt hole surfers and nirvana) just as mental illness started to take over his life.

although these are both very interesting and rewarding in their own unique ways, they may not be for everyone as they deal with quite disturbing issues, but they are worhty additions to the documentary as feature genre.

enjoy

all the best

Yeah, thats a good one. I have the DVD. Really a strange man and his brother is even worse. I would like to buy some of Crumbs' early work off Ebay.

I willl add that Kurt and Courtney (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjvkZadR7FI) is a good one.

chlorine....Chlorine is not just another film about the history of skating but a documentary that gives a unique view of the pool skating scene as it exists today. The film features loads of skating greats like Steve Alba, Dave Reul, Lance Mountain, Brian Patch, Tony Alva, Steve Olson, Steve Roche, Darrel Delgado, G Man, Dave Hackett, John Torchia and many more. The documentary covers all of the aspects of backyard pool skating from driving around, jumping fences, draining pools, getting busted and some really good skating, of course, including some rare never seen before archive footage. Created by Julie Angel and Milan Spasic. Directed by Milan Spasic.

Hmm...guess I'm the odd man out.

I prefer my documentaries in the old-fashioned traditional sense:

Nature

Like National Geographic, Wild Kingdom, Nova, etc.

If it ain't got a pride of lions feasting on a zebra's butt or a crocodile chomping on a wildebeest, or a wasp trying screw an orchid, it ain't no documentary.

Bah, can't click the link while I post. I watched one with him and a psychologist. I dug the psychologist because at the end of the interview, he went over the nature and nurture aspects of the Iceman's personality.

He said he participated because he knew he was fucked up, and wanted to know why.

The best documentary might be No End In Sight. Every American should see it to realize how colossal mistakes the leadership made in the Irak war.
Michael Moore is overrated, see John Pilger's documentaries, like The war on democracy, The new rulers of the world or Breaking the silence - Truth and lies in the war on terror. Those have some proper investigating journalism.

Errol Morris, Errol Morris, Errol Morris. Check him out on imdb.

My favorites are The Thin Blue Line, Gates of Heaven and The Fog of War. Gates of Heaven is about a pet cemetary in the american mid-west. But trust me, great!

HBO, BBC and PBS documentaries (Frontline etc) are all top-notch.

Somebody else mentioned Capturing the Friedmans. If you like that one, check "Murder on a Sunday Morning."

Hardcore 2004 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396630/) - not the best doc Ive seen but very disturbing. This girl starts out really
wanting to make some money by fucking some cool guys but what she goes through to get into the business is
often hard to watch. I look at porn a little different now...but this still wont stop me from watching
Eva Angelina load to take a the face! HAhahaha!

Now I am about to watch the AVN awards again. I don't know why I like watching it but
its the only award show I ever watch!

Watching Hardcore reinforced a thought I already had...Max Hardcore is a peice of SHIT!
That guy is SCUM! Once you watch this Doc you will hate this man, even if for some
reason you like his degrading type of porn. He should be sent back to jail for what he does
to this girl alone. Disgustingly shocking

I just watched Trekkies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120370/) again. I am not a HUGE Star Trek fan but I do enjoy most of the series. The only one I never could get into was Deep Space 9. TOS and TNG are my 1st and 2nd favorites. Anyways...Trekkies is a great documentary and a grand look into the subculture of the once strong Trek universe. Its all but dead these days. Its hard to believe this doc is 12 years old now! Time sure slips by when you start getting older.

Perhaps the new movie will bring back the fans again. Its a shame to see Trek die like it did. Trekkies 2 is also great and is an update on many of the people you get to know in the first documentary.

Highly recommended to everyone, fans or not.

Loose Change, Zeitgeist, etc. I would categorize as great "propaganda films" which is a genre in its own right. (See "Triumph of the Will"). Not that I am comparing Nazis with anything. Michael Moore also a great propaganda filmmaker, absolutely amazing.

Or I guess conversely you could view Moore's films as op-ed pieces. But propaganda films are a whole 'nother thread entirely, and propaganda might not be the right word even when referring to "Triumph of the Will."

YOu can't do that anymore since they installed that new net! Now people kill everyone in the house and then shoot themselves!

I think the net is a dumb idea. Some people got saved because they had patrols and they actually saved some people from jumping and got them help. Now people have to find something else to jump off of I guess. I would like to see people throw themselves in a lions den or something creative. Make it fun and interesting!

In my opinion, the following is great enterntainment on a long winter's night or gray, rainy day: "The Land Of Celtic Ghosts", narrated by Richard Basehart.

It is a very atmospheric documentary on spectral happenings in Ireland, Sctoland and Wales and was made around 1976. It is not remotely similar to Sci Fi Channel's, "Ghost Hunters, thankfully, but is fairly hard to find.

The last I read, it was only available on VHS from Liberty Home Video and was out of print, but that may have changed.
