So I just got this pimpin' sweet fiber-optic internet connection. Within 2 weeks, I have already uploaded literally hundreds of gigs. I am no longer satisfied with just filesharing. I think I want to host a game server, but the real question is what? Back in the day, I knew some people who ran a Ragnarok Online server. I don't think I want to run an RO server, but I think something like it would be cool. Does anyone have any good suggestions? I think it would be sweet to have a game for all my friends and even maybe ZP to join in on. Suggestions are needed. Thanks in advance!!

SOF2 please!!!! The servers are getting thin but this is the best shooter ever. I havent played a game yet that is as well made. The newer games may look good but the fun factor sucks nuts.

i was hoping for something more co-opish. I want there to be a community if this thing gets afloat. that is what was so appealing with RO. you would always have close to 100 people in it at all times, and you could sit there and chat, go on quests or grind (oh so much grinding in that game). id even consider a pirate Wow server, but i dont want blizzard angry with me. i dont think id like them when they are angry.

One good suggestion that i got was a Freelancer server. the default limit is 128 players. the only problem with it is by default, the multiplayer game is quite shallow. even worse than RO. however, there are mods for it, and i might be able to find something to spice it up.

Edit: i think i just did. Im going to buy some parts for my old PC and get it up and running as a server. im still looking for suggestions, but if i dont get any more, i think im going to go with freelancer.

It's old, but try Ultima Online.
With a little bit of work and effort, you could have 1500 people playing in a few weeks ;P

Of course the REAL conundrum is what will people play if i make a server. Ive never played any of the Ultima series, but i do like the screens i was seeing when i looked it up. but will people play it? that is a bit more important than if i like the game. i want to get both, as i want to be a part of the game as well as hosting it. I feel like Freelancer can accomplish this, as it is one of those games that if you havnt played it, you should, because you probably wont find any close alternatives. those screens of Ultima just looked like Diablo to me.

That does bring a thought. i wonder how well my old PC can run a UT3 server. i do like me some UT3, but no one has a good enough PC to run it. Stupid PC game makers thinking that everyone ever has PCs that can run games with amazing graphics

im shocked and appalled. why is RO even remotely close in popularity to WOW? i know MMOs are all about grinds, but RO is only about grinds. its gameplay is so shallow, an ant wouldnt drown! (ba-dum-ching)

Strange how so many ignore the best online game ever. Im totally serious. Ive played many (I stopped playing RPGs some time ago though. Phantasy star online had me geeked back in 1999. I lost about a year of my life) online games and none are as fun as SOF2. Its hard to even get people to try it because its old. There still are mods made ofr it every week abd the community is still well alive. No game plays as well as SOF2 and I will play it till there are no servers left and then I will likely start running my own.

I know of at least one more person here who knows how awesome this game is but he has not posted for awhile. Its time to speak up man!

sof2 as in soldier of fortune 2? i should have confirmed the first time you posted. i never played it mulitplayer, but i just coudlnt get into the first one. it was just an average shooter with over-the-top violence as it's gimmick. the once that i saw SOF2, it was more of the same. If im going to set up a shooter server, id go with something rare, but something I'm familiar with. maybe descent or jedi knight.

even so, i still want like at least 20 people on at once, and hoping to aim for a hundred. older shooters have a limit of 8 or something.

So I just set up the server for freelancer. It is called "Signa's Server," and it is running Discovery Mod 4.84. We will see how it turns out.

you will need this (http://files.filefront.com/Freelancer+Mod+Manager+131/;3211006;/fileinfo.html) to run mods, and this (http://www.moddb.com/mods/discovery-freelancer/downloads/discovery-freelancer-v484) to have the right mod im running. Go ahead and "get" freelancer if you dont own it like you should already.

EDIT: It turns out that MS shut down their global servers, so just instantly connecting to me is impossible. HERE (http://files.filefront.com/Freelancer+Global+Server+v09Beta/;9285378;/fileinfo.html) is a workaround

I'm still holding out hope that people will join this thing. so far, I've only got one personal friend to join. This mod really is meant to be played with LOTS of people

I just did some playing with the server, and it turns out that the reason everyone that joined was some one i knew personally was because they were only connecting to me through hamachi. This has been fixed.

Also, if there is any confusion on how to get this up, I don't mind using Pando to email everything you need to set up. Its a lot of fun, and it would be awesome if some people would at least try it.

I hate myself for suggesting this, but many people are still crazy about WoW and free WoW feeds the crazies. Also Ragnorok Online and such are good too!

How about a Dark Ages of Camelot server? Game is pretty awesome and has a lot of co-op features within the realm...RO sounds like fun as well
