First, rename c:\Windows directory to c:\Windows.old then reboot to C:\ prompt before running setup.exe! As message suggested setup.exe is not a windows application, so don't boot up your computer under windows.

i dont know if i'd even bother with any of that renaming stuff. If it wasnt originally your PC, who knows what kind of shit is on it. wipe it clean. any XP disk that i have used has always been bootable. if its in your CD drive when you start up the PC, it will look on the disk instead of your hard drive for boot files. when it does that, the setup for XP will start, and you will have the option of formating the whole C:
Not every computer is set up to do this off the bat. Depending on your PC, you may have to hit F2 or del, or whatever it tells you right when you start up your PC (Hit "X" to enter setup message. Dont hit the letter X, hit what it tells you to.) when you get into the setup screen, look for some boot options, and see if you can get your CD drive above the Hard Drive in the boot order options. Save and exit. Once you do that, put the CD in and watch it boot. usually you have to "hit any key to start XP setup." do that and you should be good.
Keep in mind that if you do a reformat, you will lose everything on the PC. so if you have something on there that you need, be sure to back it up first. However, that should be your goal, as who knows what kind of saved porn you may one day stumble on.
