Any good alternatives to bittorrent that are also free out there? I don't mean the application but the protocol itself or whatever its called. And excluding gnutella. Unless there is a virus free gnutella network.

No such thing as a virus-free network.

Here's a thread on this very subject.

There are several good alternatives discussed.

Be aware, though...as Smoovious already pointed out, there is no such thing as a virus-free network.

I know there is a newsgroup out there that gives you 50mb a day for free after a $3 signup fee....I've been trying to remember the site though....I'm sure someone out there knows it.
If you think about it, that really isn't bad, you get great speeds and can have an album in 2 days, or a 700mb movie in 2 weeks, 1400mb movie in a month....It isn't as good a torrenting, but you are asking for alternatives :)

That would be TeraNews (http://www.teranews.com).

I have used TeraNews in the past (still have a valid account), and for a free newsgroup provider, it isn't bad. 50 MB per day really isn't very much, but it is a good way to experiment and become familiar with newsgroups.
