Okay, so I have a desktop that came preinstalled with Vista Home Premium. Well my computer crashed last night (complete my fault) and so I had to reinstall Vista. Well I didn't have a recovery disk/partition so I used a downloaded copies of Vista and I during the install I selected I had a Home Premium (because I was going to be using the serial that was taped on the side of my tower.)

Anyways, Vista wouldn't take it and they only gave me 3 days to activate my computer. So I did the automated phone thing and it still wouldn't go. So they transfered me to a live guy and he just gave me a phone activation code.

I thought it was kind of funny. Because my thought is couldn't people just install vista, use a serial that has been used too many times or whatever and then just do the automated phone to not have that work, and then have a live tech guy at M$ just give you a phone activation code?

I dunno, just sharing my thoughts. Just glad my computer is activated and running again!

The Windows Genuine Advantage lab and dev group continuously works on tracking non genuine copies of all Windows, Office and other products.

The fact that you had a serial taped to the side of your tower is probably what saved you. I've dealt with those people in India, they're nearly impossible to get an resolution out of.

How did the sticker save me? Is it because I was initially trying to enter in a real serial key? When I did the phone activation it just had me enter in like 10 blocks of numbers. I didn't tell him I had a sticker or anything.

The guy just asked if this was the first time it's going on my PC (and technically it's the 2nd time) but I just said "yeah" and he read off my new activation!

Cool, I get it now. Well hopefully this will stick and no more hickups for you.
