Actually these are not lawsuits. They are pre-suit demands or pre-litigation letters. Some interesting stats on RIAA's site..

"Formal lawsuits have been filed against 2,465 letter recipients. These individuals either disregarded settlement opportunities or were not given the option to settle early because the university failed to forward the letters. Of the 5005 letters sent in prior rounds, the RIAA has reached settlements with more than 2,300 of those individuals."

...
... current round of lawsuits come after the [b]RIAA demanded that royalty rates for artists be lowered (http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/../news/9245/RIAA+Wants+Songwriter+Royalties+Cut+by+39%25%3F). The move has made many doubting the idea that the RIAA is suing music fans to help the artists careers.

I can't help but wonder; Was this was their first clue?
