View Full Version : How fast is your bootup?
phalkon30
December 2nd, 2002, 11:36 PM
I spent another half hour tweaking regitry and bios settings to make my system boot up faster and run faster in general
this is a two part thread, one, I'm curious how fast your boot up time is, mine from a cold start is exactly 31 seconds till its fully loaded, about (28sec when i see windows), I think this time is damn good, but i want to see what your times are (my shut down is also about 5sec)
I'm using XP Pro on a AMD Athalon 1800+, 512meg DDR 2100, 7200 RPM HD, and a TNT2 Pro graphics card
I would like to hear what your times are for ANY OS, I want to see how much of a hog xp is, also if you could include your system info, i would really appreciate it
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*note: only intended for xp/2k*
Now the second part, a small list of web sites that had great guides on them, they helped me to tweak my startup greatly, maybe they can help you beat my time
- http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/winstartupnew/ (startup tweak guide)
- http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm (yes i know i post this link a lot, but i figure i saved at least 20meg of ram and a ton of processor usage using this site, it is a guide to help you remove un needed system apps)
I also use some programs to tweak further...
- http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml (this is a very advanced program if you know how to use it, but it can harm your system if you dont know what you're clicking, be smart, the main feature i use is the startup area, you can select which programs you want to run on startup)
- http://www.mrtech.com/mrsystray/ (still in beta stage, but a very helpful all in one system tool, it has too many features to list, all are listed on the web site)
- http://security.kolla.de/ (removes adware/spyware faster and more completely than ad-aware, it also fixes some security threats for IE, fixes some minor registry problems, clears usage tracks for many major programs, and has a great backup feature so you can undo changes)
I know i have done other tweaks and stuff, but the only other thing i can offer, is to do a windows update, get the latest drivers for your computer, and defrag the hard drive
happy tweaking!
*WARNING!!!!*
*Phalkon30 is not and will never be responsible for you F***ing up your computer, use this guide at your own risk*
(Krell my new lawyer suggested i post this warning before i got flamed for you doing something stupid, please, READ BEFORE YOU CLICK, the info is there for a reason!)

XP Pro, AMD 1.2 GHz, 256MB RAM, 80GB+120GB HD, NVidia GEForce, 21" screen
Computer turn on procedure:
1) Get out of bed
2) Get naked, shower, get dressed, brush teeth and so on
3) Make fist, swing it through the air targeting your mirror image and say: "I'm da man!"
4) Bum, bang, ding, boing, pang, crash - the usual fall downstairs
5) once conscious, get up, hobble to computer desk
6) turn on volume (farthest control to the left of right speaker)
7) rotate arm to the left, about 6.5 inches
8) aim for round power button on monitor, press firmly
9) take a step to the left
10) careful now, bend down to reach gray power button on PC case
11) computer will now boot
12) walk about 6 feet, unlock door, step outside
13) scan porch for newspaper
14) if no newspaper swear or kick a flower pot
15) otherwise pick up the paper, but make sure no snails are sticking to it
16) step back inside, a prior 180 degree turn will help
17) head over to kitchen, drop paper on counter
18) get a cup, fill with water, microwave for 3 minutes
19) add instant coffee or tea, sugar and creme if coffee
20) search for a spoon
21) walk back to desk (that's a right turn from the kitchen)
22) computer should be fully up and running, and ready to use
Do you in all seriousness want me to do the above with a stop watch?

to me the boot up time tells you how the rest of the system will perform, to me its a big deal, if it isnt to you, oh well
maybe i should just remove the poll and stuff and just leave the guide

I haven't rebooted in almost 2 weeks and my system is still stable. I will tell ya the time the next time I reboot.
By the way, I have a AMD Athlon 1.3GHz, 384MB SD ram, 32MB DDR ram Radeon video card, 60Gig HD, Win2k pro.

Nah, good post, especially the guide with the links. I always wonder which services and startup programs (the ones you find in the registry) my system really needs. Gotta check those links you supplied.
Since I'm at this, I see the day coming where good old RealPlayer 8 will have to be upgraded to Real One (cough!). Anyone know a guide to remove all the crap in it?

I try to stay away from Real ANYTHING. Not many files are encoded to Real format and any other player can do what it does and more... not really a point to getting Real Player after that.
EDIT: Plus Real One (the latest in Real players) sucks ass.

Around 10 seconds from bios check to windows and another 3 or 4 till the HD stops going and the system is waiting for me.
Win ME....1gb ram.....20gb boot - 60 gb second - 80 gb 3rd drive. And a crappy over heating POS! Maxtor Diamond max that's half the normal thickness...have it in a firewire case with a fan blowing on it every second that its on....stupid non form factor crap. P3...
Gotta jet lmfao...start my crappy day.
Reaone? Bah I'll never install any real crap....I use stolen drivers off an old system real came on and use a winamp plugin if I must play it in real format. (Just use streambox to 'steal' the file and play it local in winamp)
Later all.

yeah your right.
was just messin with ya. I keep my system lean and don't let anything load up except firewall and dsl monitor. I also clean my registry and try and use efficient applications. I hate bloated hogware which seems to be very popular now that systems boast 500mb ram and more. still they are a waste especially if you multi-task like mad like i do. :-)
you only mentioned one thing I had not looked at before or use and I will check it out. mrsystray i think it was called?
right on , very good post actually!

My new p4 2.26ghz with 512mb ram en winxp pro boots up about as fast as my old p1 100mhz with 16mb ram and win 98
. Should I conclude that winxp boots up slowly? LOOOL

well, i would leave mine on for months at a time, but i have to reinstall windows every couple of months because of all the crap i do to it, i tend to tweak things just a little too edgy, so i end up restarting 5times in a day, leave it on for a week.........and so on
CCS, i was hoping you would post to this because you have ME......but i was including bios load time, i have that tweaked and got rid of about 4sec from factory specs, my longest boot sequence is my vid card, wich has to display its own logo window that i cant turn off, but i think mine is about the same as yours after the bios timewise
mrsystray, i love that program, its one of 3 that i let load windows, one feature i forgot to mention, it can stop un needed services for the "average home user", so if you dont have the time to visit blk vipers site, you can use the built in tweak to stop these services, and its a ton safer to do, other than that, it gives system info (comp specs, sofware versions, how long windows has been running, current IP, yadda yadda), it shows free ram, has quick links to messenger/browsers installed, mp3 renaming tools, one click or hot key shutdown........and more in a very compact and nice looking beginner friendly GUI, oh and its free!
as for RealOne, i think its the only player that allows you to play real network files, so Moonman you are somewhat incorrect, but i know what you meant, if you dont use real network files, its useless bloatware that constantly hogs mem even in off mode, its very sneaky
maartendc, yeah, my 66mhz IBM could boot up in about 30-45sec to, but it had a 500meg hard drive.....not much of a chalenge especially after a nice defrag
....and the reason i was thinking about deleting the poll, it seems if i put a poll on a thread, much less people post back, its like they see that and ignore it, no matter what the topic
CCSDUDE
December 3rd, 2002, 04:46 PM
I meant 13-14 seconds in total....from pressing the power button to zero HD activity.
Realone sucks.....Real anything sucks...like I said use streambox to grab the file then play it local via a winamp RA/RV plug in.

I needed a change as I am actively trying to mellow out. I was gettin pissy and losing patience with the lame threads and the way that ZP has almost lost touch with being about p2p and computer stuff. So in reality I should have been more supporting of your very good thread. I need a few more posts to be back to my old self completely.
I'm going to ignore shit posts and try and be helpful like you just were.. (or try! hehe)

lmao, im loading windows, a cancer research thing, NAV, MrSystray.................and thats it
trust me, for an xp machine, thats damn fast, my dads p4 with the 533fsb and 512megddr cant do it in less than 45sec, and ive tweaked his slightly
talking to my friends, they're all over a min, other than you guys, i havent heard of a faster boot (from ppl that i know anyway)
edit: sry, didnt see your post rickio, i know what you mean about mellowing out, ive tried my best to do it to, what gave me the "strength" to start ignoring ppl was skorch, he made me realize some people are just not worth fighting, honestly, i think we could all learn a lesson from that prick

trust me, i have very little booting up, a clean install took over 45 secs to boot, so i know my startup is optimized
heres the thing, i use XP Pro, i know if i used 98 i could whip your ass

I'm using XP. i wasnt trying to compete with you or make fun of you in any way (although it did sound a little that way, sorry) I was mostly wondering why my boot was faster, to see if your software or other hardware slowed it down....anyways thats cool. What vid card do you use?

December 11th, 2002, 09:04 PM
very odd, heres a question, did you build your comp, or is it a dell (or similar)
some of the manufacturer built comps have a bios that is lightning fast and are completely optimized for fast restarts, i did mine from the ground up, oh, and i also have Pro with SP1, that could have slowed it down
i have a 32meg AGP 4X Riva TnT2 Pro
and in some ways, i was opening myself up to competition by even creating this thread...lol

1.0 gighertz Pentium 3, 384 MB RAM, 40 gig HD, over 1 year old HP (defragged today). Kerio Firewall, AVG, NetPerSec, Proxomitron, TrayManager, and RamBooster for my extra start-ups. 40 seconds is my total start-up time. It was well over a minute when I had Mozilla booting at start-up. Damn near two minutes when I had NAV 2003 Pro.

It's just a USB disconnect program.
All it does is allow you to "safely" disconnect any USB "hot swappable" device you have hooked up. IE A digital camera/a smart media card reader/digital video camera/ect.
Right click on it and click disconnect or something along those lines....
Then unplug or remove the media card from the reader. If you don't you may crash; although I've never had it happen....it's possible. LOL

No no, my computer is virus/spyware/adware free! i don't really know why it takes that long. Nothing in the Startup folder and the only thing in the registy that startsup at boot-up is norton and msn messnger and some audio thing. i do keep my computer on 24/7 but i don't think that'll decrease the boot-up time everymuch. but yeah, i probably need more RAM

on my new computer it boots up in about 35 seconds. thats with NAV2003 and NPF2003 loading up.
@pornmaster - that long a boot up doesn't sound very healthy. suggest u defragment like phalkon said and check out blackvipers site if u haven't already. took about 5 or so seconds off my boot-up time but that's cause the manufacturer had already disabled most uneeded services:wings
