It all depends on the extent of your security settings.

First make sure your brother has his wifi turned on. If its built into the laptop their is usually a switch, if not make sure its enabled and all the drivers are probably installed. Also make sure his wireless card able to pick up the signal. So check if his card is b, g or N. Make sure that everything is compatible with your router.

After that enter into your routers settings window. This can usually be achieved by typing something along the lines of 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.0 into the address bar of your browser. If neither of those work you can check the underside of your router for the address or possibly the manufacturers website.

In this screen you should have a wireless settings category. Look for something along the lines of wireless access list, or mac address list. This menu allows you to restrict or allow connections to specific computers based on their Mac address . If enabled only the computers added to the list will be able to connect to the network. Although this can vary from router to router. So if enabled add your brothers mac address to the list, if not enabled I would suggest enabling it in the future as an extra layer of security. If you don't know your MAC address go to start-run type in cmd and hit ok. Now in the command prompt type in IPCONFIG /ALL and look for the card you want to add.

Lastly you have to make sure that your wireless encryption settings are properly setup. Find out if you are using WEP, WPA, etc... Then the proper sub categories also have to coordinate. Then come up with your password or pass phrase write it down. Then once set up go and type in the Password in each computer you want to connect to the network.

Hope that helps

I just woke up, im not caffeinated, and I look like Willie the homeless clown with my hair sticking up . . .

but it occurs to me

You need to update the firmware on that router before you try to configure clients to it.

And btw - if theres any way to return that router and get a linksys wrt54, do it, do it now.

I have to agree, Netgear is quite the piece of junk. The Netgear router my father had bought before his Linksys, was slow and always lost connections. It also had terrible range, even when connected to another Netgear card.

I see that people get Netgear because their equipment, like Belkin is inexpensive. The Netgear WGR 614 is so common, and you can get it for US$30. My neighbor had her Vonage terminal drag that router down, and she would have to reboot the router daily, and we even thought about putting a timer on it to cut the power off in the middle of the night.

I think that router is okay, it's best for a smaller house or apartment with a few rooms.. Dimeslime, post your router's model number here, and about the error that your brother is getting.
