I just bought a new desktop today and it has Windows Vista Home Premium on it. Now I need to keep Vista on the computer for my new media extender I bought.

My desktop came with a 320GB hard drive. It splits it up into 160GB and 160GB. The second half I am just going to store my music, videos, and pictures on so I can connect to it with my laptop.

Now I right-clicked on the D Drive (the spare 160GB drive) and clicked share. I called it D_Drive. And it says to connect to it from another computer (such as my laptop) I'll have to type in \\desktop1\D_Drive and it should work.

However, when I go to my laptop and type in \\desktop1\D_Drive it gives me this error:

D:\ is not accessible.
Access is denied.

However, when I go to "My Computer" on my laptop the D drive is there and it shows "green" as in it's connected. But everytime I double click the drive, it gives me the same error.

Any ideas on how I can get this drive to share properly on my desktop so I can access the drive from my laptop's screen? :icon_scra

Thanks

A number of things to do and/or consider.

It maybe simple has a right click on the drive icon and select "share".

You networked though wireless, ethernet, or via router ???

You may have to the Network and Sharing Center. Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center then select the "File sharing" to On.

Set up a workgroup and/or network between the computers.

Or

Stick all your info in the public folder. That will give you easy access with other computer(s) as well as other logon users without selecting to share that file and/or folder.

I'm still a newbie on vista. I try a number of things so I don't know weather it was the combination of changing of setting that did it, or I did one thing correctly to network my laptop when I take it to work.

When you just type \\desktop1\ do you see the drive?
If yes, check the NTFS permissions (right-click the drive and select 'Security')

If not, try mapping it as a network drive and connect as desktop1\administrator (or whatever username you have on that machine). This can be done with 'Tools', 'Map Network Drive' in an explorer window. Or Run, cmd -> net use y: \\desktop1\d_drive\ /user:desktop1\administrator

are there any firewalls installed? If there are you have to allow your local network access.

Are both computers in the same workgroup?

Is your laptop account listed in the permissions on the shared drive?

Open "Control Panel" - "Network and Sharing Center". Switch the "Password protected sharing" off. Also check sharing permissions and general permissions on the folders you share. Make sure that 'all' are allowed to view the content.
