Gnutella ultrapeers

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering, upon connecting to the gnutella network, how does a node know to become an ultrapeer? Is it the initial connection setup that the user manually enters; i.e specifying the adsl, cable, modem option during the first install, as required by limewire and shareaza, or is there a built-in algorithm that automates the process in question?

I'm not an advanced programmer, otherwise I would read through the limewire source code.
