the dvd/cd burner i had started screwing up.it would burn, but not dvd's.i followed all krell's advice,i updated the firmware,un-installed and re-installed nero.but the problem persisted.so i bit the bullet and bought a new drive.but the same damn thing is happening!the medium isn't even being detected.when i put a blank dvd in it says,in effect"the drive is empty, please insert a recordable medium.nero doesnt even give the option to burn data dvd, just data cd,as far as my computer is concerned i have no dvd drive!i'm at a total loss about this.cds burn fine,at least so far.any help would be most welcome.p.s.sorry to start another thread about this,i couldn;t locate the other thread.thanks in advance.

The only thing I can suggest is to check and see if your burner is supported but by nero and if not see if there is an update with nero that is. go to their site and they should have a list of drives they support.

UN CLE FLOYD . . . .
always a pleasure to see you
Ok, if you JUST bought a new DVD player, whats the first thing you need to do to it? yeeeaahahhh boooyyyyy update that damned firmware again.
First off, place a blank new DVD in to the burner and close the tray.
Do you recall me mentioning the Nero Info Tool?
Do you have it? Verify that you have it. I dont have Nero installed, but I know where a copy is : D:\Utils\Nero 6 Ultra Edition Plus Updates\Nero Toolkit
OK, lets launch it, shall we?
OK, swell.
You see the little icon at the top that looks like a floppy? OK great! Now LEFT CLICK ON IT ONE TIME.
This will prompt you to save the file as InfoTool.txt, save it to desktop or some place easy to get to.
Now attach the file to the reply, so I can see it.
GREAT, thx!
Now wasnt that easy?

i guess im stupid, because this isnt easy for me.i have nero info tool, but i couldn't find a green icon or anyway to save it as a text file.what i did notice is that i had a blank dvd in,but nero said my drive was empty with no medium.so that goes back to my orginal problem,it seems mycomputer will not recognise blank dvds.ive tried 5 different mediums.it must have something to do with my computer if2 dvd burners do the same thing.i just don't know/

I think we can all agree this is a windows\application problem.
The DVD drive shows up in Device Manager, and has a drive letter, but will not read a DVD.
Will it read a CD?
Will it read a DVD or CD that has conent on it?
First try this : Nero ? CleanTool - pick the proper version.
http://www.nero.com/enu/downloads-cleantools.html
Do this and reboot.
Now do this - Installing a working ASPI layer
I would recommend that you try these solutions in this order.
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm
Reboot
If there is a folder for Ahead Nero in the c:\Programs path, delete it.
Now re install Nero with the default settings and reboot.
When you get back to the OS, use the Nero Info Tool with a blank disc FIRST.

It gets frustrating when people dont follow step by step instructions by the steps. Krell do you have a program that will record everything you do and play back mpg? you might want to try and send him a step by step mpg.
when I had this problem all I had to do was firmware and update to newest nero

Some Windows OS does not come with ASPI drivers, check the following article & download those utilities would help solve your problem!
Afterdawn's ASPI Article: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm

DJ I already posted that link. Why keep enabling and babying these guys?
UF has been a computer user for at least the 2 years he's been on this site, and IF he cant even find the freakin SAVE AS button on an app and does not yet understand the UNIVERSAL SYMBOL FOR SAVE, then he probably needs to stop downloading, stop burning, and take up whittling, or shuffle board, something less complicated than P2P.
Jesus H Christ man, where the fuck can you get any real help that doesnt ask for some log file to provide accurate info? Why bother to ask this guy if ASPI is installed, when all he can tell you is " I dont know, is it in braille? "
Fuckit he can go straight to the Nero support site and explain to them how he cant provide any information. . . . .

i looked into that, and i have aspi.i just don't understand why cd's can burn, but dvd only reads them,it must be windows somehow,i wouldnt think two burners would have the exact same problem.and the first burner had burned dvds fine for over 2 years.

Krell is giving free advice, you can't get better than this!
If you are looking for help, you'll need to give information so others can help. Otherwise, they don't have the problem, it's YOURS! Isn't it?

hey krell, while we are on the topic, i have been having issues with my DVD drive as well. see, i have 3 dvd burners. two internal, one external. when i use a particular one at all; ripping or burning, it slows my PC down to a crawl. i had this happen before on my old PC, and the solution was changing the IDE controller from PIO mode to DMA. however, this new pc, they are hooked up though SATA>IDE adapters, so when i go to the device manager, i cant set any options for them. the second drive works fine for ripping, but when i burn, it mostly turns out coasters. its the same drive that i had in my old PC, and i suspect that its the newer 16x medium that im burning on that it doesnt like. i looked for a firmware update for it, but couldnt find any. in the end, the only drive that works flawlessly is my external, and even that has errors some times.
so my question is then, what might i do to keep that one drive from slowing down my pc, and if your magic knowledge can find me some new firmware for a Sony DW-D22A. what i did find when i looked was a bunch of forums talking about the "infamous D22A" and its many issues.

it's possible he could just be frustrated...krell I think you uploaded a firmware update for me thanks!
now how to install it? (I must google this myself - pfft)
ohkay I've reuploaded krell's image to my photobucket for Uncle Floyd.
Uncle floyd they want you to upload the text file generated by nero info tool. to this...Run nero info tool (with blank Dvd-r media or whatever kind krell wanted you to use)
Then after it's done its thing.
Click on the the thing krell has circled in the picture below:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii241/darkmsngr/OBVIOUS.jpg
if you can't see the pick then click on http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii241/darkmsngr/OBVIOUS.jpg[/IMG]
this link ([IMG) to view the image.
Clicking the symbol that looks like a small floppy disk will allow you to save the results from nero info tool to a location on your harddrive (computer). Save it to your desktop as the default Info.txt file.
Then reply this post by clicking the 'add reply button'
Look down at the bottom of your post just below the 'Submit Reply' and 'Preview Post' buttons for something called 'Additional Options'
You'll see something called 'Manage attachments' Click the
'Manage attachments' button. This will let you chose a file on your computer to upload as an attachment to your reply in this thread.
Just browse to your desktop.
2) Highlight the file you want to upload
3) Click open
4) then click upload
After its uploaded it will show your 'current attachment' under
the 'Upload files from a url' dialog.
Scroll down to the very bottom of this window and click 'close this window'.
Now go back to where you've typed your reply to this thread and click 'submit reply'
It should upload your attachment with the reply.
hope this helps.

OK, I havent read through the whole lot of replies here, but my mate is running vista with a P35 chipset (which apparently has no support for PATA devices now, but uses a bridge chip to handle 1 IDE port) He has problems recognising his DVD burner. We came across this article:
http://www.digitmemo.com/articles/176/howto-fix-the-jmicro-ide-issue-in-intel-mbs/
I dont know if it applies but I thought I'd pass it on anyway
