whoa... This is what im getting from your post. You are trying to convert an avi file in rars so you can burn video to dvd, using your media player. That is DEFINETLY not going to work.

Avi - playable on most DVD player software/not playable on most stand alone DVD players (although this is changing)
Rar - playable on almost nothing.
My gut feeling is that you've got this mixed up and have DLed rar files.
1. Use winrar to convert the rar files to avi.
2. Use convertxtodvd to convert the avi to a stand alone DVD Player compatible format.

convertXtoDVD is probably the best way to go with an avi file, there are other options i like to use nero head, which is really fast compared to convertXtoDVD but it only writes with an .ISO file. but as Enter8 said you need winRAR to convert the .rar files into .avi and then you have have two options
1. Convert the avi straight onto the dvd play with convertXtoDVD
2. You convert the avi to .iso file and then burn it on a DVD with a Nero
it all depends on how good the quality you want the files, but as you can see with some of the DVDR releases they come as and .iso file so you can burn it straight onto a dvd using nero - it gives me normally great quality.

um, don't most dvd players play avi and mpegs these days??
I bought a new one for $25 the day after boxing day and it plays everything from pal to divx.

A lot of new players do, probably around 75%. But the surge in DivX players has only happened in the last 8 months or so. Of the existing players out there, I'm guessing that less than a quarter are DivX compatible.

WOW , when you read a thread like this you realise how much knowledge you take for granted.
And when you see a newbie comment like the one at the beginning here you a real feel for how much you have learnt.
RAR = compressed file like a ZIP
normally you may download a film in lots of small RAR files , which when you UNcompress leaves you with an AVI
AVI = a movie file (mpeg4 movie file)
if you then want to play it in a dvd player , you need to convert AVI (mpeg4) to Mpeg2
thats as deep as im going to go
google doom9 , lots of tutorials there on conversions
goodluck newbie , and one day you will be helping a newbie your self once your PRO ;)

You need to decompress your rar files using Winrar. You will have an avi file left over. Put it on a dvd as a data file or place it on a USB flash drive and play it on a Philips USA DVP5960, Hi-Def Conversion DivX DVD Player with HDMI and USB.. (only 60 bucks or so...)... forget about that whole conversion process...

i second that , dont do the conversion, search ebay for HDD PLAYER , you'll find lots of portable players which play avi's on tv
