Ok i havent used an instant messenger for like 8 years but now i want one to keep in touch with a friend of mine, so i was wondering if anyone here had any opinion about which is the best to use now at days? I used ICQ but according to wikipedia it seems like Jabber is better. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks guys!

Pidgin

But yea, Pidgin is the best because it handles practically every network in one program - so if one friend uses AOL Instant Messenger and another uses MSN Messenger, you can talk with both without having to run separate programs.

I really like miranda as an open source alternative
to the different corporate bloatware. and, they also
have a portable version that you can put onto a thumbdrive.

and i fogot to add, go ahead and check out jabber.

It is a very viable alternative to both AIM, MSN, and YAHOO..

it will work with open source chat/im clients such as miranda

and pidgin, with less exposure to corporate servers and

corporate data mining... good luck!

I can see that youre working on the 7th post in ten minutes, when you spam to get your post count up you'll get banned!

And you dish out this advice, but you dont know what Waste is, or how to get a seed box? Bullshit.

Offtopic, but you started 3 threads and bumped several old threads in your first few minutes of even being registered here. Go away, don't come back, you will not be missed, and you will not get any invites to torrent sites.

I just use regular AIM most of the time.

However, meebo.com is a nice online alternative when you can't install AIM or other messengers, or get AIM express to work.

Seriously, meebo.com is the shit. The only problem is that it takes a little bit to first load up, at least on some slower computers.

i've used meebo.com for many of the messengers. it works pretty well too. my cousin actually told me about it a few weeks ago so i thought that id try it out and to my surprise it works quite well. also on my computer i use terraim which is a very very tiny aim client less than 1mb of space used on the computer and runs extremely fast. also i have pidgeon which is very similar to gaim. if not the same. also i have the original aim but it is a system hog so i prefer to use terraim or meebo.com

with regards to meebo.com. Sure, it is conveniant, but do you REALLY want to extend all of the details of your personal life to not one, but TWO different commercial entities?? In this
case, the original IM service as well as the web based third party (meebo) that makes everything "easier" and more "conveniant". I guess everything comes at a cost but i would prefer to keep my personal footprint as small as possible on the web...

If you prefer using MSN (like me), then there's now an open source version:
http://www.amsn-project.net/

But that pidgin looks mighty good.
