so i was wondering if any of you here know of any good ways to get around a firewall and use bittorrent. i am currently located at a boarding school all week long, most weeks of the school year (minus the breaks, like right now for thanksgiving) and am very annoyed that I cannot use bittorrent while i am there.

i know quite a lot about how networking works and various ways of getting around firewalls (ie. http tunnel, ssh, vpn, etc.) but i was wondering what you guys use (if you use any) and what you like the most or what works best.

the problem i really have is that i do not have access to a computer outside of the network so setting up a vpn or an ssh server on something like that is pretty much outside of the question.

this leaves me with (to what i know) one option--that being the need of a third party provider of some sort to host some type of server which i would connect to through a variety of means.

ive looked into acquiring a shell account on servers (most dont like bt due to high bw usage, i dont blame them) and even used http-tunnel sometimes (sucks balls at speed and is TERRIBLE for upload) but i havent been able to find something that works well enough to be worth the trouble of using it.

what im really asking for is some advice as to what you think i should do in this situation to get to bittorrent at school.

i am a bit weary about using a third party server for tunneling due to the fact that most (if not all good ones) require actual personal information which could lead to trouble potentially...

the thing i did think coudl be a possibility is the purchase of an actual private server through some company. one that woudl be all mine to host whatever i wanted on and all that good stuff, however, i do not really know where to begin in looking for something like that.

i dont know if anyone will be able to be any help for me here, but if by chance someone is, please give me any and all ideas, im open to basically anything you all have to say.

you guys get the gist of my post by now, ill just sit by and await some replies.

u said it, if u really wanna torrent efficiently, with good up/dwn speeds this is the way. Its main use is not to bypass a firewall though its for high speed, but u can connect to it thru the firewall and download from it, so u bypassed the firewall.

Its usually called a "seedbox" cus many serious torrenters use it for seeding at great speeds for good ratios at major sites. But it just as efficient at dwn speeds.

The thing is $$$, its expensive especially if u need high traffic (amount of GB up+down/month) and if u want the OS on it to b windows.

A cheaper soultion is vps, u get a "part" of server u share with other people, gives u good speeds 2.

Also keep in mind that u have to download from the seedbox and so ur connection should b fast or its just worthless, I dont mean u should have the same speed as the seedbox, but something decent.

Im writting all of this cuz I assume u looked at prices (and I dunno but I think some1 who goes to boarding school has $, mayb its normal in uk or sth lol)

Any way this is just a drop in a sea, im new :( in this forum so I dont know where stuff is here but search the forum for seedbox and google for it to, some1 will probably posta link for stuff here in a min or so.

some names are Vectoral and Leeware those r co that provide vps and/or servers.

cheers

thanks for the info and names. i think i will just look into that option but you're right about the gb up and down being the expensive part.

i have lots of experience in all *nix environments as well as windows so i woudlnt need the server to be windows at all. it does not matter to me.

i will look into stuff more tonight and over this next week and when i come to a solution i will post up what i did with costs and how tos and everything so that others can learn from this as well.

please continue to provide any information or tips you guys have to share!

I'm not sure if anyone else is reading this at all but in case someone is interested or maybe just cus it might help someone out in the future, ill post an update:

i found a site (www.vpsland.com) that offers really really really affordable hosts in both linux and windows flavors. now, im not a super huge bittorrent user (no where near in the TB's or anything like that) so their package of 200GB a month for 14 bucks is perfect for me.

It is hosted on a pretty decent box with a 64bit dual core processor and (in the package i will get hopefully) 256mb of ram gaurenteed (1gb burst)

the package contains root access to the server with a dedicated static ip (nice)

they also offer higher bandwidth packages for any of those interested in them as well.

i emailed them specifically asking about their approval of bittorrent on their servers and the reply (which came in a blazing fast 10 minutes) said that the only third party software they do not allow is the hosting of an irc server. which is fine by me.

hopefully i found something that will really work for me, 14 bucks a month is perfect if it means i will get super fast access to bittorrent at school and EVERYWHERE else in the world now. :-)

its nice to see someone actually making an effort and searching properly. rather than just relying on asking people. ur a smart person, and ur going in the right direction.

I have done an extensive search about vps, I even found a free a vps server, but missed registeration with like 2 weeks. once I even cheated my way into free vps for like 30 days but lets not talk about that ;) lol.
However I have done that a long time ago, u seem to b making an effort ill search my history for the best deals I found and post them for ya soon.

on the top of my mind there was rapidvps (http://www.rapidvps.com) check it out.
cheers

and please any1 know of any good offers post'em ;)

Filonome, what's the UL/DL speed on the VPS you looked into?

vpsland says its on 100mbit shared, so idk how many users that's shared between per server account, but any amount would be fast enough for me...(currently at my house with 1.5 mbit dsl..lol)

also i know that i am also now considering dreamhost (cheapt as HELL and super large bw and disk space)

you start out at dreamhost with 500GB drive space and that increases by 2gb every week for free, and the bw originally is 5 TB which increases by 40gb every week for free.

the base price is like 10.99 with free domain name but if you just do a no-contract month to month thing there is a 50 setup fee but you can avoid that if you purchase a year off the bat.

the speed there is 100mbits between 3 users i beleive so that's fast enough for me for sure

i guess now im leaning more towards dreamhost, seems to be a really nice deal.

filonomo, watchout:

1. webhosting is different than vps
2.DreamHost 5.95 is for 10 yrs account
3.Always read TOS, in case of dreamcost:

Servers are shared with other customers, and as such IRC-related activities or severely CPU intensive CGI scripts (e.g. chat scripts, proxy scripts, scripts which have bugs causing them to not close properly after being run) are not encouraged. Any application that listens for inbound network connections (even if the application would otherwise be allowed) are not permitted. BitTorrent clients, IRC bots and bouncers (BNC) specifically may not be run on any DreamHost Web Hosting server. If your processes are adversely affecting server performance disproportionately DreamHost Web Hosting reserves the right to negotiate additional charges with the Customer and/or the discontinuation of the offending processes.

dont rush

EDIT: I just noticed, this is my 100 post, woohoo :D :icon_thum :icon_salu

Is it possible that you can use a Bittorrent client with DreamHost?

so i signed up for vpsland and got a server there. im currently at school and using it to download stuff through bittorrent! working perfect! speeds are ~1MB/s which is plenty fast for me and probably limited by a variety of things (schools connection speed, ssh tunnel, my share of the server speed, particular torrent, etc...)

so if anyone else is looking to do something like this. this setup is PERFECT. no contracts neither, it's pay by month. and the first month is 50% off so it's only 7.50 for the first month then 15 after that (or 14 if i choose to do the three month contract...but nothing else is gained so why do it just to save 3 bucks?)

just thought i'd let everyone know.
