Ok, so I know this is the lounge....
But it seems to have the most posts and activity...
Ok, so I live in China and I have a horrible ISP. They are somehow redirecting sites to this advert telling me to download their super happy wonderful fast "connection software".
I have done a full virus/spyware scan, which turned up nothing. I have blocked their website on the windows hosts file. I have blocked them from adding cookies on firefox. I use script blocker on firefox for pretty much every website. But it still happens. It seems to be random websites. And not the same sites as yesterday.
And on the websites that are redirected, when I click on the script blocker icon "vnet.cn" is listed as a blocked script!
The websites that are loading, and show up in the advert are..
http://welcome.js.vnet.cn/solicitude.html
www.js.vnet.cn
www.welcome.js.vnet.cn
http://welcome.js.vnet.cn/images/style.css
http://welcome.js.vnet.cn/images/style.css
http://welcome.js.vnet.cn/solicitude.html
www.vnet.cn
www.embed.vnet.cn
http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml
http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd
although in the browser URL area, only the website I was trying to go to shows up...
But if I use the tor network, they dont come up. So I am assuming that the ISP has some kind of software on their end that randomly, and sometimes it nearly everyweb site, hijacks the net and directs it to their shitty advert.
I would simply use tor all the time except for the fact that it is slow as hell.
And I would switch ISP's if there was another one in this city. THere isnt.
So I think it has something to do with ports or something.
I hope someone can help me as it is driving me crazy!
BTW, feel free to spam and or sign those websites up for free porn and whatnot.
Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!
Matt

Bumping your post, and it may very well be in the wrong section.
Perhaps a Mod will move it (and help you too! They have lots of helpful staff here!)...and a knowledgeable member might help you.

I think there is an option in some internet browsers that allows you to disable redirects. I am not sure though. Maybe you could do some research on that.

Hey, sorry I put that post in the lounge..
anyways. So I checked out redirects for firefox but couldnt find anything.
THere are no unusual programs running and I just checked and somehow it has infected firefox and I cannot block cookies from two sites www.js.vnet.cn and www.vnet.cn
If I add it as a block, then click close, when I open it again, its checked.
I just called them, but my CHinese isnt that good so I think they only understood that I was very angry because they were messing with my computer.
I dont think they are going to do anything about it.
Help!!

This may or may not help:
Redirect Remover :: Firefox Add-ons (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/537)
Other than this, I would try a clean re-install of Windows.

I will do a complete virus and spyware scan in safemode, reinstall firefox with that plug in you posted and with the hosts file, the blocked cookies, if that doesnt do it. I am going to go and chuck a Molotov cocktail through the ISP's front window!
Edit: I'd rather risk going to prison for international terrorism than reinstall windows....

What's the big deal with a clean re-install? Virus scanners, are, imo, pretty much jokes. If you do a clean re-install and the problem occurs again, you'll know it isn't a virus.

Yeah, but a clean reinstall would mean backing up all my pics and stuff... I dont have a backup disk, its just my laptop, I have no money, no friends no nothin!
I reinstall windows and I have nothing left... nothing.
I might as well throw my computer into the river!

Well if it's the ISP that's redirecting you (and it looks like this is the case) reinstalling Windows is useless. To rule it out, try to get your hands on a Linux LiveCD. You'll boot into Linux which will be running from the CD drive and you can see if the redirection happens then. You can download the CDs (hopefully) at http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
Do you get to the pages that you want to view at all?

curley wagner, cheers.. I will download this and try it out tonight.
So linux live has a browser in it? And can run straight from the CD with no installation?
Anyways, I ask only because the downloads here are slow...
If it can go to the websites with no problem, then it means that windows has a virus or spyware or something correct? If it is then maybe I will switch operating systems. Its just a big pain in the ass..
I have a temporary solution it is to use tor to arrive at the website, then I can turn it off and use that website...
Oh, its too early here... I have class in 10 mins... gotta go.
Thanks, I'll update after I download that linux thing.
Cheers again!

That's it man. You just boot from the CD and you're in Linux. Firefox is the default browser. If it works ok on the same hardware with another OS, you've got a Windows problem.

if u didnt finish downloading yet
u can also download it by bittorrent (faster), its free and legal for most of linux os.
many threads here will explain how bittorrent works.
Im not sure if I can link to torrents here (although its legal) so search for it its easy to find.
cheers

bit torrent you say?
I might give this new technology you speak of a spin!
Anyways, update, I think I solved the problem by calling the ISP and yelling at them. Its not happening anymore!
That linux download keeps getting cut off, so I am going to try out this "bit torrent" that mikaaz talked about!
Hey, I googled bit torrent, and apparently you can also download movies and music! To think! Free music and movies! Its a good thing too, because I am partial to free things and I happen to also like watching movies and listening to music!!!
/me goes to put on an eye patch and download illicit entertainables...

The redirects can be one of three things: on the ISP end, between you and the ISP, and on your local computer. If its on the ISP end, you're SOL. If you have a router between you and the cable modem/dsl modem, you might want to check if someones been messing around with the routing tables. If its your local computer, you can boot off a LiveCD(like suggested above) or you can install a virtualmachine and try it off that.
