I currently have an Archos 604 and think it's probably the best device I've had, based alone it's its sheer reliability. But given that there are now touch screen devices available I would like to know which is the best device to get at the moment?

That's really going to depend on your needs. What is it you are looking for? How are you going to use it? What features are important to you?

For example, do you want a hard-drive based player or a flash-based player? Hard drives typically have more storage space and hold more songs and videos, but they also have internal moving parts. If you are going to be jogging, exercising, working, etc., you might want to avoid a hard-drive based player.

Features: Do you want wi-fi web browsing, FM radio, voice recording, calendar, contacts, and email? Do you want a wide range of file type and file management compatibility or do you not mind being tied to Apple's proprietary formats and the iTunes bloatware?

Do you want batteries that can be replaced by the user or a sealed unit? Do you want output jacks so you can display your videos on an external TV system?

I don't think there is any such thing as a "best MP3/Video player on the market". The best player will have the features YOU want and work best for what you want it to do - this will vary from one individual to the next, so what might be the best player for one person, will be a piece of crap for another.

Ipod are over priced and over hyped by people like you elias_t. We have come a long way from having to choose from either the Creative nomad or and Ipod and smart consumers have done just that. What I would suggest is find out which features you want, find the products that carry those features. Look at bad reviews to get an idea of what might go wrong with it. Then when all is decided go see it at the store to see if you like how it functions. Thats the best advice I can give you.

Ipod touch

(u know, the touch screen one)
is worth every penny.

and also the touchscreen is virtually unscratchable. Look on youtube for ipod touch scratch test.

U can jailbreak ( a certain hack) it so that it plays gameboy advanced sp and nes games.
Plus it goes on the internet and has tons of other features downloads.

That's not true at all.
I use Mediamonkey from two different computers instead of itunes. Mediamonkey automatically finds your song info / album pictures so you can use cover flow easier.

Lately the zune has been really really cheap, and offers almost the same functionality as the original iPod(not touch). It's a nice alternative
