I have a strange problem: I was trying to forward some ports on my modem (because apparently they put firewalls in those too), researching information on PortForward.com when I realized I needed to ask a question in the forums. I registered and was told an e-mail with my password has been sent. Well it never came. I've tried repeatedly; it repeatedly says the e-mail was sent; and I'm repeatedly NOT getting it. PortForward.com is the only place on the net that I've found that deals with this topic in-depth, so this will make it hard for me to find answers if I can't get on board.

BTW - Just in case anyone here knows: One of my problems is that I can't get into my modem. The site tells me I should be able to access it by typing "192.168.1.1" into my browser, but that don't work. I've done that before with routers but never with a modem, but that's what the site says, and -- sure enough -- it doesn't work. Thank you.

Modems and routers are two completely different things. I'm not even sure you CAN forward ports on a modem. Could be wrong, though.

As for finding out how to get into your modem - some will allow it and others won't. Google is your friend.

Type in the brand name of your specific modem and combine that with various search terms such as IP Address, password, or admin.

I hear you, but I've got the manual PDF here telling me this, and the PortForward.com default guide for this specific model modem telling me the same thing. So I'm past what you're referring to, and into the la la land of nothing-makes-any-sense-anymore. In the PDF it even explains port forwarding beautifully, but I simply cannot access the modem in the way these references tell me I can. What can I possibly do now?

I don't know if you can do this with modems, but if there is a way to reset it that might clear up whatever is blocking you from getting inside to its settings. I've had to do a hard reset on my router and it cleared things up.

The only way you would be able to forward a port on a cable modem (or dsl modem for that matter) is if it has a router built into it (some do). If that is the case you should be able to access it by the default address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) into a web browser. If you are not able to access it it, then there is something wrong with the configuration or your modem is not a router.
