When I try to use Azureus it is flooding my Router with connections.
I am running a Linksys WRT54G first generation router. I have installed DD-WRT V23 SP3 Voip firmware on the router.
My internet connection is Comcast cable 768Kbit/8Mbit
I have several computers and servers as well as a VOIP phone connected to this router.
I have static NAT (Port Range forwarding) configured on my router.
Normally I run around a 100 connections at any time. When I open Azureus this number goes to 496 connections and every outbound/inbound connection becomes really slow or fails.
How can I change the settings in Azureus to stop this behavior?
This only happens when I run Azureus.
I want to share files. I would not mind being a major seed but this kills my connection.
Thanks in advance,

you should be able to set the maximum number of allowed connections in azureus. I use uTorrent, but the option should be there, both for maximum connections globally and per torrent. Lower these values and theres your solution.

I guess I should mention I have tried changing a ton of settings in Azureus and none seemed to help so some direction as to where these settings are found and what they should contain would be of great help.
Under the transfer settings I have the following:
Max Upload 32
Per torrent max upload when busy timer [sec] 30
max download 0
max slots per torrent 4
max connections per torrent 5
max connection globally 20
and the following are checked:
use lazy bitfield
prioritize first and last piece files
further prioritize high priority files.
Thanks drtoker for the help thus far.

Well if you are set like that they only thing I can think of is if DHT is on... I dont use DHT but maybe it is flooding your router looking for peers? If it is enabled, try turning it off?
This is only a shot in the dark, with those settings, your connections should only go up by ~20

Limit your half open connections if you used the lvllord patch. What OS are you using?

OK, I Googled DHT and found
http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Avoid_traffic_shaping
Adjust DHT settings (2 mutually exclusive alternatives):
* Disable the DHT:
Go to Tools -> Options -> Plugins -> Distributed DB and uncheck Enable the distributed database
* Try to get more peers via DHT:
Go to Tools -> Options -> Plugins -> Distributed Tracker and uncheck Only track normal torrents[...]
I disabled DHT and that seems to have helped.

I use azureus and i had the same problem with crashing my router.
Here is the Fix:
Make sure you are in advanced mode, if you are not then you need to go though the tools->configuration wizard again.
After that go to tools->options.
Select the transfer item from the list.
Then you will see many options. I set "Max Connections Globally" to 64.
Limit your half open connections if you used the lvllord patch. What OS are you using?
The lvllord patch (http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads) for sp2 is the exact opposite of what he needs. A WRT54g does not have very much memory and a modern p2p client will Denial of Service the router by opening too many connections.
I wish i had a higher Reputation...

The deactivation of DHT seems to have done it.
Thanks a ton drtoker.
AgentOrange - Nailed what is happening with the router. The router can only support 512 connections. Azureus was maxing out the connections effectively creating a DOS attack on the router.
Thanks All!!!

yes, everything they suggested. BUT ALSO, i use the same router, also with the hacked firmware. you need to manually increase the number of connections allowed in the router settings. you will get booted all the time on azureus and emule and other apps with hundreds of connections, otherwise.
the way to change the allowed connections in the DD-WRT firmware is as follows ---
router settings page (default is http://192.168.1.1 )
administration page - >>
management tab -->
bottom of page ... IP Filter Settings (adjust these for P2P) <--this is their words
mine is set to 3000 maximum ports.. DHT on azureus is no prob. i keep an eye on KAD though when using emule. if left on too long it will kill ur connection, even with the settings adjusted.

Thanks jackal1234.
I will add that to the list.
All of these things have helped get Azureus connections under control and allow me to be an active member of the P2P community.
Thanks Everyone,
