Hello!

New here and just had some questions about using usenet/newsgroups etc.

I have been using my ISP's newsgroup and found it took a long time to find all of my headers for whatever I was getting, but of course the most secure way of getting things.

I now find about NZB sites and files and how it makes this process easier. However is it illegal to obtain NZB files from sites? If a site got taken down could they obtain IP addresses of people who took these type of files? I know I am stretching there but did read the new lawsuit the RIAA has going.

When you DL a NZB does the newsreader do the same thing as when it downloads headers? Is it still secure or does it not smart to be using these type of files and just to keep searching the headers.

I just want to make sure I am staying as most secure as possible when DL files. One more question - if you get a NZB can the ISP see what you are DLing? I know with the headers they can not see what you are getting - does NZB change that?

Your using your ISPs newsgroup server, so yeah they probably know whats going on with their server...

The RIAA sued Usenet.COM which is a Newsgroup Service Provider because they allege that Usenet.com used downloading music in a advertisement on their website. It has really nothing to do with newsgroups.

Yeah I was pretty sure they knew what is going on since it is their server, but with headers they really can not see what you actual DL - I was not sure if NZB files changed that somehow.

Most .NZB sites do not track what you are downloading. Newzbin is a good one and if their servers where seized. The RIAA would not likely get any valuable information as an IP address only tells that you went to Newzbin.com not what you did there. And by the way most Usenet users never upload anything therefore they cannot be guilty of distribution or making files available for distribution unless you explicitly intend to, by personally choosing to post a file.

Is it legal? Well, that's obviously very dark gray area of the law. Usenet has many useful non-illegal uses but obviously not everything on Usenet is legal. As the copyright law stands today and unless it is changed, Usenet users will always have more protection from frivolous lawsuits then any P2P network

A friend of mine told me about usenet. He also said it's safer. If you also say it's safer, then I will sure try it, though I find it difficult to learn to use...

That's one reason it's safer. Another is that there's no easy way for private entities to find out who is downloading what. Only the Usenet service providers have that information, and most say in their terms of service that they don't keep detailed records for any length of time.

In contrast to p2p networks, you'd pretty much have to have law enforcement take over the servers--with no one knowing about it--to track people down. And since Usenet service providers are generally very responsive to DMCA requests and Usenet has very legitimate uses, it's hard to see what grounds law enforcement would have for such an action.

I think most ways of sharing files are safe these days. As long as you don't upload StarWars 7 you should be okay. I never hear of anyone getting in any trouble anymore from using P2P. I don't think the law enforcement has the money to set up sting ops anymore but if they did there is no safe downloading period. They have set up sting ops on usenet before to catch porn pervs so they could do it if they wanted.

I still think there is a USDJ sector dedicated to stinging filesharing web ring operations but they have been strangly silent for a VERY long time.

They are only busting kiddie porn traderson newsgroups and htey are co-operating in stopping groups that post it and report uploaders. So far their is no sting ops in usenet, i havent rented or bought/copy any movies since 2003. I notice new people uploading fake software keygens and fake software files, which i believe the BSA is heavily doing on newsgroups to spread the mess of searching for NZB files that are real.
Going after affiliates of scene groups have been big and still they are going strong.
