That initial post is SO funny.

Hate to state the obvious but if no one shares who the f@ck are you gonna leech off!!!

There are already applications that hide the IP address of people who share. Sure they are not very effective at the moment but that will change through time.

Necessity is the mother of invention after all.

As for MS being based on leeching, perhaps thats why the open source movement consistently produces less buggy and more secure software than MS ever could?

In the short term everyone should use a socks proxy with kazaa, there are lists of socks proxies all over the net.

This will hide your IP address although it will affect download speed.

Well at least something good can come out of this thread... What proxy do you recommend?

Socks proxies that are available for public use are usually not intentionally setup that way. It is down to a misconfiguration where the Administrator allows people from outside his network to connect to the proxy.

Because of this they go up and down all the time.

There is a tool called proxychecker that allows you to import a list of proxies and check their location and speed as well as whether they allow outside connections.

You can get that here

http://www.helllabs.com.ua/labs.php?group=home&page=0&lang=en_

The problem is that most socks proxy lists are not in a format that proxychecker will accept. So I coded a quick and nasty DOS application that will convert the list into a fomat proxychecker can understand and place the new list into a textfile.

If needed I will post the code here, or if someone wants to host it so people can download it that is fine as well.

Here is a list of socks proxies, dont expect more than 50% of them to be up and working at any one time, you will need to check them daily.

http://www.samair.ru/proxy/socks.htm

I would recommend using proxies that are in a different country because the only way to get your IP address is to request the logs from the administrator of the machine. Thats if he is keeping logs at all.

There is a way to get round this problem by chaining socks proxies together, but that is more complicated and would probably murder performance too.

One possible problem may be that because SOCKS4 proxies only allow TCP packets through they probably wont work with kazaa. Thus you will need a SOCKS5 proxy.

I dont use them for filesharing myself as Im on a 56k, so I cant afford the performance hit and Im a small fish as far as groups like the APG are concerned.

I do use them for other purposes though and they have never failed me in my quest for anonymity yet.

If anyone wants me to post the code for that application please say so (preferably a senior member of ZP, I dont want to flood the board without permission. If anyone wants to host it please instant message me.

Wonderboy: A proxy hides your IP socks proxies are similar to HTTP but superior as far as anonymity goes.

Im not sure if you can use it with emule.

SupremeBeing YOU are crazy. Read the report carefully.

"The stunning report makes several claims that seem to fly in the face of widely accepted beliefs"

One report does not mean much, they were probably paid by Microsoft anyway.

Besides the entire thing is based on the 1st 10 months of 2002. Thats hardly a basis on which to make a decision about which OS is more secure.

"like the enemy getting ur code and working against it"

Which is why the code evolves faster than microsofts. Its basically a case of evolution. The problems get found and fixed much faster.

Just think on this though, if linux is less secure why did the NSA make their own version?

Also remember this story?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/28083.html

"From February 2001 until March 2002, McKinnon allegedly exploited poorly-secured Windows systems to attack 92 networks run by NASA, the Pentagon and 12 other military installation scattered over 14 states"

All windows machines.

The bottom line is that ANY machine connected to the net as a default installation will be vulnerable.

but... if your still not convinced look at this.

www.zone-h.com

93 single IP
221 mass defacements

Win NT/9x (60.5%)

Win 2000 (22%)

Linux (9.9%)

Unknown (4.1%)

Solaris/SunOS (2.2%)

FreeBSD (1%)

SCO UNIX (0.3%)

I think that says it all!!!

Your views on security seem to be as f@cked up and confused as your views on file sharing, so you will have to forgive me if Im not convinced by your arguments.

SUprEMeBeiNg, you're like an atheist running into a church on Sunday morning and screaming "God sucks! And you're all gonna die!"

I will try not you confuse you with the Supreme Beings Of Leisure, who are actually pretty cool and just finished their 2002 tour...
