ok i am new at this so i need your guys help. i am trying to copy the pursuit of happyness off the dvd i own but when i use dvd shrink the dvd has some copy protection on it that it can not crack so i got dvdfab platinum to burn it with but when i put the movie in it copies it but then it tells to put the media in but the media has to be double layer and all i have is single. so i need a step by step on how to copy the dvd using i guess dvdfab to break the protection then i guess i need to run dvd shrink to shrink it on to the disc i have. i used to use dvd shrink and i had nero as the burning engine. any help would be great.

i saw the program you use was last updated in 2005, i use dvd shrink and it was last updated the same year and that is where my problem is because all the dvd's released this year and on have new types of protection. does your program know how to break the new tech.

I've not had a problem with it. But they'll still need shrunk if they don't already fit. I don't copy a lot of commercial dvd's, but it's the one I've always used. Some dvd burning software will make it fit. Nero does.

oh ok, what do you mean nero does. i have nero 7 i think. how do i use what is given to me by dvdfab and use nero to shrink and burn it. a step by step would be great. anyone who has exp. in store bought dvd's, do you guys have any ideas for me. i think my biggest problem is dvdfab works but does not shrink it. i guess i am doing something wrong because i don't know how to use what dvdfab gives me after coping and use it with dvd shrink.

Did you use DVDFab to copy to hd first, then use DVDShrink to make it fit on single layer blank DVD disk?

I'm using AnyDVD these days, so you can skip the step to copy to hd first! :)

AnyDVD is one of the more up to date copyright protection removers. In fact, it could be THE most up to date. I would go with AnyDVD used in conjunction with CloneDVD. You run AnyDVD in the background while you rip (and I believe shrink) with CloneDVD.

just get ripit4me. it uses dvd decrypter and shrink in combination to rip 100% of all dvds. i got sick of dealing with anydvd getting out of date and having to pirate another copy. believe me, you WONT need another program ever*.

*until those cocksuckers make a new protection, but it would seem certain at this point for me that it is fully unstoppable. even brand new sony and disney dvds rip. whatever they did to break dvd decrypter in the first place, its flat-out ignoring it now. even anydvd would still have problems if it wasnt as up-to-date as the dvd was.

1. AnyDVD from Slysoft.

2. Insert DVD, and use DVD Shrink as you wish.

3. Put in a cheap single-layer printable DVD.

4. Print label onto said disc, with a DVD capable printer.

5. Notice in a year everyone has HD TVs and sort of realise this is a bottomless pit of money grabbing technology.

6. Move to Canada because it's legal.

Thank you for calling sir,

1. AnyDVD from Slysoft. This is a program that will detect an encrypted DVD that you insert, removing protection altogether.

2. Put the disc (source disc) in the DVD Reader. The taskbar icon will flash, (of the little fox).

3. Put in a cheap single-layer printable DVD. This is what you want to put the "shrank" disc onto.
3.1 Now run Nero Recode (very similar to DVD Shrink), and the resultant DVD-9 (fat momma) will become a DVD-5 (thin athlete). It may take an hour, it may take twenty minutes to complete.

4. Print label onto said disc, with a DVD capable printer. Or scribble in marker "My first DVD"

The following is my opinion.

5. Notice in a year everyone has HD TVs and sort of realise this is a bottomless pit of money grabbing technology.

6. Move to Canada because it's legal.

Goodbye sir.

forget nero. i tried using nero once and though it did many things that dvd shrink did, it failed miserably by comparison.

and read that first link from helena, i was about to make a simular post, but that covers it nicely. it should all be pretty straight forward as long as you can get ripit4me to know where dvd decrypter and shrink are on your PC. not that that step is hard, but after you set that, its all just a matter of using the 1-click mode and its all automated.

i retract what i said about forgeting nero. you still should use it to BURN your dvds. but compressing them is what i was trying to say. let us know if you need help with that. its really easy, but you never know what might happen.

ok, lets try to make this more understandable....

What you need

you need 4 programs. one to rip, one to remove the extra copy protection, one to shrink, and one to burn.

(i know you have gotten this far, but im going to reiterate it anyway)
the programs im suggesting is ripit4me, dvd decrypter, dvd shrink, and nero burning rom.

What is happening

there are several different forms of copy protection on dvds. some use "keys" which are nothing more than a digital combination lock. dvd decrypter is smart. it can find those keys. the dvd you are trying to burn is using a newer form of protection. in this, some areas of the disk pretend to be broken or scratched so that when dvd decrypter tries to read it, it thinks your disk is bad. some times, you are even able to get it to read anyway, but when dvd shrink tries to load it, it sees the bad data, and tells you it cant work with the movie at all.

i dont know if you ever looked at a dvd's file structure ever, but the movies go in the video_ts folder. in that folder, you can see tons of numbered files such as VTS_01_1.vob.
you also will always see several .ifo files. these files have info on then such as the play length of the movie, and the file size of each of the movie's sections. (the vob files).

ok enough on that. its not important to ripping, but its good to know whats going on.

The process

insert your dvd and open ripit4me. choose logs/settings and click preferences. this window should open up.

12987

try duplicating my settings if you feel its nessessary, but all i remember doing was setting the path for the other programs at the bottom of the window. hit OK when done

next, choose "1-click mode" from the main screen. this window should come up

12988

be sure to set the right dvd drive so that you rip the movie you want. (i have 3 drives, mistakes can happen), and if you are low on hard drive space (less than 20 gigs), choose process in place. when ready hit next.

I wish I knew what was happening here, but since I started using ripit4me, I started getting this message when dvd decrypter opens and exits.
12989
just hit ignore and the ripping will continue. if it doesnt, hit the decrypt button manually. you also may notice something happen with a .psl file being automatically opened. this is normal. its a list of the bad areas on the disk so that dvd decrypter will know to ignore them.

from this point, you can go do something else. the dvd i chose for this (narnia) is looking at 30mins of ripping. thats slow even for me. (note: embarrassingly, the first time i tried ripping this disk, it didnt work. it might have been smugged. its working now)

if your PC gets retarded like mine, you may need to hit another "ignore" or "abort" or "cancel" button as dvd decrypter tries to close. once it closes (automatically, or manually) ripit4me will take over and start to patch the bad data that has been ripped. if it didnt do this, dvd shrink would not be able to open the dvd because those .IFO files arent giving the right instructions. once it is done patching, ripit4me will close and open the dvd in shrink for you. be sure to do a deep analysis before you "backup" as its supposed to do a pre-scan and increase the quality. (i havnt tried a side-by-side comparison). other things to consider is unchecking the foreign languages and "custom ratio" on the extras to low as possible. anything that will get more data into the main movie will help you. once its all done, fire up nero and burn your movie.

(note to the experts. if any of you see any false info here, let me know. i dont know everything technical about dvds, and i tried to explain it as i understood it)

EDIT: WTF is wrong with my picutures?

Nero Vision 4 now compresses to around 4.3g by default.....

I always use Nero to author and burn,...so thats one program that does two tasks.....

We need more guides like this. DVD ripping isn't that hard, you just have to learn it, to be fed good information and use the right programs.

A friend showed me how to do it a long while ago, using Nero, DVD Decrypter and Shrink. He was using Net Flix, and then the monthly rental deal from a local video store where you could take out a few movies at a time, watch them and take them back for two more, all you could watch.

He would load all movies to the hard drive and them watch them from there, and I watched him do it a couple of times, installed the same programs at home and had success with my first disk. Keep trying, it's not that hard.

Has anyone else tried MagicDVD ripper? I've been able to rip, compress, and burn (in one step, with one program) DVD's that I couldn't process with DVD Shrink, AnyDVD, CloneDVD, CloneCD, etc.

Easy to use - no "remove encryption with this program" "Rip with this program", "compress with this program", "burn with this program".

I'm a big fan of keeping it simple whenever possible.

That probably your biggest problem ''Vista'' programs that were built for XP

don't run too well with Vista....at best u get error messages or at worst they don't work at all....sorry.

Reviewer:jude21 Oct 2, 2007Version:3.5.4.0 I'm using vista and having the same problem as Doogie76. I only get the error when I try to use ISO mode. It works fine in IFO and file mode.

Reviewer:Doogie76 Sep 11, 2007Version:3.5.4.0 I got a question if anyone can tell me the solution. I have a new computer using Vista o/s and I cannot get decrypter to work at all. The error message I keep getting this error message:

(Unable to create, replace, or append to file)
(access is denied)
(failed to set data for DVDDecrypterPlayDVDmovieonArrival).

If anyone could give me a solution to this problem, I would appreciate it. I'm sure it's something simple in the settings that I overlooked.

A-ha, I didn't see that about Wcupk using Vista. I can imagine that there would be problems if DVD Shrink hasn't been updated in 2 years. I had assumed that if it was any Windows it would run it. Now you'll have to find Vista compatible programs or get access to a computer with XP or 2000 if you can.

That's why you shouldn't be in too much of a hurry to use Vista....
Heaps of people are going back to XP, to avoid the hassle of some programs not working too well with Vista....

To the original poster...

In answer to the question..."Where can I get that free?"

If you try searching on the California's brother's most righteous Google.com etc, there before ye will be the answer to the burning question "Where's that free?" Some terms I have heard in passing are "Bittorrent", "Usenet server". I wouldn't know about that though. Also who's guide are you following, when you say "I followed the guide?"

If you're using some hard-core scripted program, I cannot advise. For American to American region discs, the method I described above works fine. Ask Pamela.

the tweekvista site i linked for that first error said explicitly that dvd decrypter still works in vista. i think there is something else that is causing problems. pisses me off really. all that work typing that all out and not even the pictures show. let alone it helping him.
