I've recently purchased a 3rd gen. ipod nano and am waiting for it to be delivered but I'm wondering:

Do I need to sign up to itunes and buy all my music downloads from them only?
Or can I download my music with another company and still have itunes convert my downloaded music so that it will play on my ipod?

I know a lot of people don't like ipods and the whole ipod revolution, and I'm not a fan of sheeping it myself, but I wanted one because I wanted one. Just to clear that up...

ipods let you use mp3's from outside the itunes store. and other formats too.

Yes. You may free download video and audio and use a converer to convert video/audio for your iPod.
Here I found a guide to tell you how to free download video/music:
http://www.daniusoft.com/tutorial/video-mp3.html

You may see this article to tell you how to free download video, then convert it to your iPod music. :icon_pira

I've ignored the other posts, but having owned a shuffle before, you can play .mp3 on them. If you want to buy music, you can use the store. They don't play FLAC, they may play .WAV, and musically, they sound like cra*p because .mp3 is lossy. But still smaller than a CD Player, and better than an old tape Walkman. Also, probably better than strapping a gramaphone to the back of your pushbike.

It's also worh mentioning that you can take an Ipod apart and put new batteries in them (Ni-poly) I think, and also you can easily put in a new hard drive (3.5" IDE type, I think).

Thing is yours will be FLASH memory, so you can't obviously, or it would look silly.

Ipod-mania is a crock of old sh*te - the marketing is crap. IMHO. I had a 1GB mini-hard drive in 2001, ate too much battery power. It's a load of hype.

their are lots of ways to get not legal music onto the ipod, you can even load not legal videos onto the ipod without buying them

Just as a follow up to this: my old ipod hardly ever allows me to add music downloaded from torrents. I used to just drag the file (in itunes) over to the ipod icon several times and sometimes it worked!

The fix is to right click on the file (in itunes) and click 'convert selection to aac' or whatever the hell it is. Basically you have to convert most stuff - via itunes or nero or whatever you've got - to get it to go on some ipods. I don't know why.

Though I'm sure 99% of users have already worked that one out.
