Fucking awesome film.

Sure, I love video games and documentaries, but it was a well-done and fascinating documentary that tells a gripping story. Plus, you get to learn quite a bit about Twin Galaxies (http://www.twingalaxies.com/)... the ranking site of professional videogamedom.

I grabbed it last night. It is really good. Makes me want to play some Donkey Kong too.

The King of Kong? Isn't that what Kanye West calls himself? I think I read it in Rolling Stones

Ive fired up the MAME donkey kong and I dont remember it being so hard! So far my best is 18,000 some odd points. Ughhhh! Need practice.

Man, after a day I can barely break 30,000 points on DK. Im getting better but I still cant figure out the secret to controlling the barrels on the ramp stage. Does anyone know? It does not seem to work the way desribed in the film. If I could get that down it would be aces as its the only stage I get killed on.

My new dream is to open a classic arcade and hold championships evey weekend! That would be so damn cool. I miss the golden days, it was such a great time. Arcades on ever corner, huge ones at that. Every gas station had two or more games. The store down the street from me had five machines at all times. I remember them having Donkey Kong and later on Crazy Kong which was a bootleg that I liked even better at the time. People feared me! Those were the days.....

I actually know a couple dudes who are arcade cabinet collectors. One of them has some old laser-disc cabinets. One, of course, being dragon's lair, and another that is a top down shooter.

I gave MAME DK a try a few years back. Without the right kind of joystick (not THAT kind of joystick ;) ) it's impossible to get the right 'touch.' You really need a genuine cabinet to do it right- a cabinet with cigarette burns on the console, if you can find one.

At my local pizzeria, I'm legendary for my Defender play. I also had the high score on Joust, but that was from figuring out a way to cheat by standing on the ledge and fighting pterodactyls.

Could it be M.A.C.H. 3? Ive been wanting that game a long time!!! I have the MAME version less the laser disc back ground as it used computer generated targets over laser disc back grounds. I was really good at that one even though it did cost like a dollar to play even way back then. There is another I would like to have but cant think of the name right now.

Ive been eyeing table top Ms Pac Man machines for a long time on ebay but have yet to find one for sale close to me so I could pick it up. I will likley buy one at some point. It would so cool for my living room

I found a cool torrent with all the extras. When you load DK it puts the boarder up around the field to make it look real. Cool! Also includes all the cabinets or at least almost all! Plus even more stuff. I like the snapshots so you can see the games before you try them. Its up on mininova under roms titled Extras. There is also a fairly new rom package, 15 plus gigs worth, that is bad ass. Some of these roms ive never even been able to find, even when they had dump sites online. Even has prototypes of some games.:drunken_s There are a few people seeding with very fat pipes. It only took me about 10 hours to grab!!!!!!!

Im getting the feel for it on the keyboard but Im very use to playing games that way. I can rock it pretty well but a 4 way stick would be aces. One of my old video game mags from the 80's has an artical on how to build your own stick. Its pretty cool. Perhaps I could scan it and post it. (if I can dig it up)

15 gigs worth of roms!?! Wow, that's a lot of roms :)

I've been thinking about building my own stick for quite some time. A while back, I saw a stick for sale that looked pretty close to the real thing, but it was kind of costly and would have to have been mounted on a board. The biggest problem with a DIY stick is that it's close to impossible to get the exact same feel (resistance, give, heft) as the real thing. I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to my video games.

I've got a logitech gamepad that I got for $10 and it's okay for console games, but for the arcade stuff, you have to have a stick. There's just no way around it. I've had the robotron mame for years and am dying to play it, but that needs two sticks to do it right.

The one in the mag had different springs to keep the stick centered. You would need to find the right gauge springs for the feel you want.

Progress report: I figured out how to control the barrels although Im not very good at it yet. This is KEY! IM almost ready to go for the world record. When my arcade stick gets here I should be set! Watch for me on the news! I just need a year to get in shape and its on like Donkey Kong!

Anyone want to take a freindly challenge right now?

I think mach 3 is it.

It was 50 cents when I played it... it was at our little dome arena and we operated an Espresso bar there. I would play that game during basketball games, and then get to work at halftime, when the rush hit.

You should do one of these mels:

Ive been looking at those and thinking about it. Me and my dad built a cabinet a long time ago that was really cool. It wasnt fancy but did the job. It housed my Atari 5200. If you order all the parts to make one of those its gonna be a couple of grand which is just nuts.

What I think im going to do is simply set up my other pc as a retro gaming rig. Get another desk and be done with it.

Wow! That is some truly impressive handiwork.

Reading through those pages gets me REALLY amped (especially the ultimarc stuff, which is pretty much exactly what I was looking for) and it's not that hard for me to visualize myself doing this, but... once built, how often would I really use it?

I totally wasted my youth on this stuff, do I need to waste my adulthood as well? ;)

Yeah, there are so many roms out there taht MAME can run, I would be on it all the time, plus its just fuckin cool to have. Your friends will suck you, er.... love you big time. You can even get cabinets with a set up that takes quarters like the arcade plus it will set up for Xbox 360 ect so you can make money off your buds.

The one on the right looks something like the one me and my dad built. Its not really that hard. Just build a shelf for the TV and slide it in.

Hmmmmm, it would be sorta cool to use as a PC desk too. Damn, thats a great idea

Here is a good review of the stick, Im so JAZZED! http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.digitpress.com/columns/images/xarcade_002sm.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.digitpress.com/archives/cc_xarcade.htm&h=165&w=250&sz=10&hl=en&start=62&sig2=APdjZwvf1JOZjm02_VJnWw&tbnid=Rdkp2DEMDi1SIM:&tbnh=73&tbnw=111&ei=gcwJR7yQK466iQGMmsDnDA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dx-arcade%26start%3D42%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D21%26hl%3De n%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN

X-Arcade has greater customization of button layout and stick control, with up to three additional memory positions for button configurations, and a removable bottom panel that allows you to adjust the tension settings on the joysticks

Thats awesome

As well as putting an xbox in there, you really need a sega dreamcast too, as a lot of dreamcast games were straight arcade ports (that's aren't emulated in mame).

Mels_Smileys45
October 9th, 2007, 05:12 AM
I sure wish there was a working dreamcast emu. Ive been through two DCs. Those sure were some fun games. I loved Phantasy Star and Jet Set Radio. Crazy Taxi was a good arcade port as well as Hydro Thunder.

ALRIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!! My stick came today and so did I!!!!!!! This is the best control stick(s) ever! Anyone who is into MAME should get one. I got mine referbished but it looks and plays mint. It has a lifetime warranty and they even pay all shipping. I can't see it breaking though, its built like a tank. I cant express how awesome this is! You can also buy hook ups for all platforms. Im thinking of buying a 360 so I can get in on the championships. If I would have known the 360 was holding the Ms Pacman contest I would have run out and bought one!!! FUCK!!!! But the high score was 3,600,000!!! I cant get even close to that. My arcade high score is around 250,000 and I thought I was good!!!!???

Shit! After a day of brushing up on my Donkey Kong I can only beat 50,000. Shit this is hard core. What the hell is wrong with this game??? I am dead set on getting into the top ten on this game but what are its secrets?

Can anyone post a pic of their MAME high score? By the way, the MAME DK recored was broke today at over 900k!
