But what are the options? Paper sleeves, file notebooks or just a stack of cd's with no protection. The little thin ones look ok but when you mix them in with regular sized jewel cases they pretty much dissappear. So the question is;
what is the ZP way of filing burned cd's? :shoot

I still hate those little plastic boxes. The little tabs break. You can scrach them with a feather. They group together like a big lump of plastic. If you have tried the thin ones they just disappear in the forest of nothing.
These things must go

I dont use little or big jewel cases. I put all my burnt CD's into plastic sleeves made by LaserLine. I love them, and everybody to whom I give them thinks they're wonderful. Look at a really small/poor picture here. (http://www.123av.com/media/images/Photos/MZSL-50.jpg)

anyone actually tryed the red velvet case that is listed in the new hardware section? I kind of like the steel case that CDProjects uses. Anything with big zippers kind of gives me the willies. Do you guys just stack up your ink smeared CD?

This appears to be my own private passion. And at this point my thread. I get to put anything up that I want and it just shows up as a "view new post" to you.

Hey.....

I like to use folders, the only problem I got is finding ones that are made to last. caselogic suck. The only thing I use jewel cases for is when I give out disc's to people. That way they are out of my hair.

how stupid is it to put zippers on a cd case? My ultimate case would not have zippers. maybe some kind of hinge or at least velcro. The more I use them the steel boxes from cdprojects might be my answer. they use some kind of bubble sleeve that doesn't create any fricton. Still no news about the red velvet case. I have not seen these for sale anywhere.
I saw a table made out of jewel boxes once.
That is a good use for these things.

If you do get a case with removable sleeves, make sure its not the kind where the part of the sleeve that clips into the book wears easily. You can sorta see the wear on the sleeve attachment thingy, and this is a sleeve i've been using for about three to four weeks now, within a few months I bet the plastic will be torn off, because (you can't see this) but the attachment part has these little black grooves that make the things incredibly easy to tear.

The CDprojects line uses them and while the cases are very sturdy and good the sleeves are crap and not worth the investment, unless you use them to store CD's you never listen to anymore.

I use caselogic for BURNED CDs, because the cases themselves are cheap enough and they'll last for a while until I need a new one. If they get scratched, so what, there are always more blank CD-Rs.

I am useing the steel cdprojects box with the sleeves with the breakable tabs but I do not attach them to the stupid wire holder thus the do not break.
thanks for the replies I know the truth is out there

While the big jewel cases are awkward and break often, I rather like the slim ones that have been around for quite a while for stuff like singles (paying way too much for one song...) but are now becoming more popular.

Yes they break, but they are cheap to replace, and considering how my CDs get treated by the other people in my house, I consider them actually quite durable...

I too hate Jewel Cases.. They take up far too much space. I just take a piece of 8.5" x 11" paper.. I go to www.allmusic.com and locate the CD I want. Clip the songs and print it out. Fold the paper, make two cuts, fold again and tape. The Cds fit perfect and take up little space. At Target I bought a few Sterilite 17qt containers. I can fit two rows of CDs, about 600 in each container...

I know a woman that cut a sheet of felt about 2'x3' and then stiched little cd sized sleeves on them so one held about 20 CD's. All her family's CD's were in one place in neat little stacks of 20.
it kind of looked like a distorted christmas stocking :santa

I don't mind jewel cases either, especially with music CDs because you get the artwork. It's my opinion that if you feel compelled to download an entire disc AND download all of the artwork, you should really just buy the damn thing.

I don't burn all that many CDs, so I'm happy using the slim jewel cases for those - they dont take up TOO much space, and for some reason I can't stand always looking through some kind of giant book to find a CD. I only wish there was an easy way to label the edges...

According to the mohs scale of hardness, talc ranks a 1 (soft) Well, I took a piece of talc and scratched a jewel case with it, and the jewel case scratched the talc. So jewel cases and talc are pretty much even, except that jewel cases can shatter, while talc crumbles.

Big ones, slim ones, single ones and double ones. Have you ever had one that is like a single case but the insert folds out to expose a second CD. After finding it good luck of ever playing that baby again. I went shoping for alternatives the other day and knota. Big backpack looking things with huge zippers. Little boxy looking things that look like a purse or a butt pillow or something. Some of these things are giant. Does someone really need to carry 300 CD's around with them. What just in case I get stuck somewhere for like three months!!!!! Ok so we don't have one. i am going to put my artists eye on some creative paper thing and see if I can get something going. It just seems like a printer, some good art on card stock and a razor o blade ought to do the trick. make some cool little things and put them in a index box or something.
Here is the deal they gave away CD's last weekend (rebate mail ins) and music is now mostly free so what still costs------IT IS THOSE BLOODY LITTLE PLASTIC BOXES :devil iknowthisismyproblem

I found something worse that a regular jewel case: a digipack thingy.

Basically a cardboard fold out with the plastic tray glued in. I'll scan a pic in tomorrow, since I can't find the case right now :tol

I hate Cds. I keep all my muso on my HD, and if I want to play them I copy them to my Nex II player.

I haven't got round to a big stereo system yet, but that Creative HD is the thing to use. I wish it would rip directly though.

I use a CD carrying case. Its not to big, not too small, the sleeves don't fall out or scratch the discs. But whatever's right for you I guess, be it felt, cardboard, paper, or steel if the music plays then keep it.

The jewel cases are atrocious.

I use several alternatives.

For original music CD's (and some burned ones with inserts) the large CaseLogic type of zippered book is my favourite. The CD fits in facing slot with the insert in the slot behind it. You lose the back page from the jewel box, but that never mattered much to me. I just keep em in a box.

For programmes and backup data I also use the zippered book and label their spines accordingly.

For auto and portable use, CaseLogic and other makers have hard shelled cases. These only hold 12 CDs but protect them well. I only use burned CDs for auto & portable use anyway so if one gets damaged it's easy to replace.

so what did we learn. Sorry Will but I have been collecting for a while and have hundreds of these little boxed devils in my hellish bookcase. I would be ripping until 2012 if I put everything on my hd. Plus i do have a large fullsized, don't get me started on bookshelve systems, stereo that is in another room from my comp. So I burn for the car and the system so your method is not right for me.
Zippers read page one of this thread. yes hundreds of pages of folded paper is not a good thought but might be the only alternative. I agree that cdprojects steel case is the only thing out there that shows any promise but those tabed sleeves.
Remember when the record stores used to put jewel cases in these monster sized cardboard boxes. They were shaped like really big candy boxes because people were used to buying vinyl and it just did not feel like you were buying anything when you just had a jewel case in your hand (easy to pocket one too). But people didn't like them because you needed the strength of a weighlifter to open one and get to the music. Only the industrially tightened plastic wrap is left on the cd these days maybe with some kind of plastic theft prevention tab. There is another reason for not buying a new cd, just can not get the plastic off of them.
Contra if you ever come to New Mexico stop by for a few weeks and make me some of those paper things. k

I was reading Michel Moore's book "Downsize This" and along with all of the evil politician and industrists that have commited crimes against the people, he adds the inventer of that little silver tab that secures new cd's. Now this is a very evil little thing. What is that glue? It never goes away and it nearly imposible to remove. Michel says that this guy should just be lined up and shot. The rest he offers far calmer and creative solutions for there crimes.
Verve Records for years one of the most creative companies and leader of the jazz movement in the 50's and 60's, has a new way of displaying it's remastered jazz classics. The return of the album jacket. These are the real deal just smaller. With full original art and gatefold covers, Verve gets the I hate Jewel Cases award for recoginizing this problem. While I have not touched one of these, I imagine that they are difficult to get in and out.
