Having a big problem with p2p,that problem being I cannot browse online on any
browser while any p2p program is running, they just time out.Plus, those
programs aren't running very good either but one at a time I guess.

I've tried azureus,µtorrent, etc but nothing...all the same problem,as soon as
they start up nothing loads in IE or Firefox anymore.

The most annoying thing(and maybe most predictable)about all of this is this
is on a new computer and all.

I really don't know where to begin so any help would really be welcome.

Do you use a router or anything? Is Windows Firewall up ? (or any other Firewall for that matter.)

New computer with vista? Specs?

Is DHT on?

Sounds like you need to find a guide on configuring the client. You probably set your d/l and u/l speed too high.

no, i only use the dsl modem that my ISP provided. its a speedstream 4200 ethernet/usb ADSL modem. the spec's are:
Emachine T5088
Intel P4 CPU 3.20GHz
501MB memory(ram)

Also,about DHT being on,I don't know?How can I check?

It's a vista issue. Windows Vista, in order to run at a half decent speed, needs AT LEAST 2 gb of memory. 500 mb isn't enough.

You could buy more memory OR you could save yourself some money and track down a student copy of xp sp2. 500 MB isn't ideal for XP, but your machine will still run a LOT faster than it does now.

I should install XP and maybe then I'll see if this is what the problem is?

Vista with 500 mb memory = slow as molasses.

If you install XP, everything will be faster. And, although your current problem is probably related to something else, if you install XP, I can just about guarantee the problem will be gone, just by the fact that you'll have a new OS with a different configuration.

Btw, before you reformat your hard drive and install xp, make sure you have the right drivers for XP on a cd. It takes a little effort to track them down- the emachines site doesn't have them. You have to get the part number from the motherboard and get the drivers from the manufacturer. If it's Intel- it should be, it's not that hard. I just recently downgraded an emachine t3612 to xp, so if you have questions, feel free to ask.

The t3612, after I downgraded it, was actually a lot quicker than I expected. It's hard to say exactly, but it felt like it was about 5 times faster with xp than with vista. Why they would include an OS on a machine with specs that can't really support it... I have no idea. I guess people want the newest, regardless if it slows their computer down to a trickle.

Even if you downgrade to XP, I'd still suggest you get more RAMs for your machine!

Vista does neex more memory, but I think you can fix the problem by limiting the upload speed when you configure the BitTorrent client. If you can upload at 384K, which is common for aDSL, you should have a max upload speed of 300K, so adjust by setting your max speed at 200k and you should not have the problem. Also, keep the number of max connections and max torrents low.

I agree that you can not run Vista with only 512 MB RAM but the problem is that he can not browse the Internet. This has nothing to do with running Vista. Yes, your computer will be slow starting programs but you should still be able to browse the Internet. My guess is either you need to adjust your d/l u/l speed (do not set it to max) and also look at your router. You may need o adjust your maximum ports. What kind of router do you have? Also there are known problems with some Linksys routers with factory firmware and uTorrent.

^Exactly,I actually don't find Vista particularly slow even for just 500 MB RAM at least
not for what I'm usually doing. My Internet connection is far from slow or glitchy either

The problem is my browsers go to a complete dead stop when I open any p2p.

I'm going to try XP and just see how that goes, but before I do that how would I go
about adjusting my maximum ports or configuring anything with ports at all?

Oh,plus it's a SpeedStream router for what it's worth.

What program are you using? Do you have a router? If so what kind?

Here is a decent guide on the settings for uTorrent. http://triponic.com/guidestutorials/optimal-utorrent-settings/

It still sounds like to me that you have you settings for u/l and/or d/l set to maximum. If you do this it will kill your bandwidth and you will not be able to get to anything on the Internet.

Hello, I am by no means a pro when it comes to this, but a problem I ran into was when I was using peerguardian 2. When I had http blocked, I couldnt visit a lot of sites, and it took a couple of days of research to find out what the problem was. This just sounded a little like the same problem, hope it helps.

That's not the best advice I've ever seen.

My desktop has a mighty 256mb of ram and I can surf, run uTorrent and burn a dvd all at once. More ram is nice, but that 1 gig people state is essential is actually simply... nice.
