I've read that WinXP prevents full download speeds on P2P programs like Limewire. Anyone know how to free up more bandwidth? I normally get around 46 kbps on my dialup connection but am lucky if I get 5 kbps with Limewire. Thanks.

Try installing this patch: http://www.lvllord.de/download.php?url=en/EvID4226Patch223d-en.zip It increases the number of half open connections availible in winxp.

I'm 99% sure you confusing kbps with KBps. kb=kilobit, KB= kilobyte

When you say your getting 46 on one and 5 on another, im fairly sure the 46 is listed in kbps and 5 is listed in KBps, because 46/8 (conversion rate for bit to byte) = 5.75.

With dialup your stuck with slow speeds. Theyre is no way to speed a connection that is already at its theoretical max.

Yes as hawkburn put it you can speed up your dialup connection by switching to broadband.

I have never had a problem with download speeds in windows- XP or Vista. You just have to have everything configured correctly. If you think broadband is not available where you live- either by cable or DSL, try Hughes net. If you can afford dial up, you can afford Broadband. The telephone company here has broadband for $24.95/month, and most dial up costs at least half of that.

Broadband is so cheap now! Or if you're on a budget, if you have a smartphone, like a Blackberry or PDA see if you can use your phone as a modem. That way you can get way faster speeds without adding an extra bill.

I feel sorry for anyone still stuck on dial up in this day and age. It would take FOREVER to just load some sites with heavy graphics!

They are right, if you cannot get broadband, you should check out hughes net. At least it would be faster than what you have for surfing.
