Afterdawn (http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/) used to be the mecca for ripping information, but Finnish copyright law changed and they had to pull a lot of their guides off the site. I did a search for the guides on the net and found them here:

http://www.freewebs.com/micksden1/cddvdburningguides.htm

These are a good start, but, unfortunately, they're a bit dated.

Ripping/compressing/encoding/authoring/burning can all get very complex. From what I can tell there's very complicated programs with a big learning curve for those that want greater control/better quality and there's simple programs that tend to make quite a few choices for you. Eventually I want to be a ripping/burning guru, but until then, I just want movies that I can watch. For converting AVIs that you download into a format that the majority of DVD players can handle, ConvertXtoDVD is the most popular simple solution. It's definitely done right by me.

As far as ripping/making copies of DVDs you own... I haven't done a lot of that- when I do, though, I'll probably use anydvd for removing the copying protection. From the research I've done, anydvd not only works well, but it's kept up to date. Actually, I'll probably use anydvd, and, should that not work, I may give DVD X Copy a try. DVD decrypter used to be the copying protection buster of choice, but, as far as I know, development stopped on it quite a while back. If I was ripping an old DVD, I might give decrypter a shot.

CloneDVD is put out by the same folks as anydvd and seems to provide a fairly simple way of separating out the elements you want to keep/trimming the size, as well as compressing the information to a target DVD size.

ConvertXtoDVD. (makes me chuckle to think anyone pays attention to the guides anymore - VSO have taken away the need to think unless one wants the very best quality from Mainconcept or TMPGEnc). CopytoDVD or Nero to burn.

I also agree that afterdawn is a great site with tons of information. Convertxtodvd does take a while to use but works great for converting any format (avi, xvid, divx etc) to dvd and also burns the disk for you. If you are looking to rip then burn regular dvd's, then a great program is ripit4me. There are no more updates for it (was shut down a couple of months ago) but I still use it and have not come across a dvd that I could'nt do. Please keep in mind that you should only make copies of dvd's that you own. I hope this helps.

you could use nerovision, which lets you add menus' and such. another favorite of mine is dvd santa. neither of these are free, however. I think there is a demo of dvd santa out there, but eventually you'll need a serial.(ws) :/

Here, you can follow the simple steps to convert your favorite DVDs to any format with Nidesoft DVD Ripper.

User’s Guide

1. Download ‘Nidesoft DVD to Zune Converter’ from
http://www.nidesoft.com/downloads/dvd-to-zune.exe
http://www.nidesoft.com/dvd-to-zune-converter.html
And then install it.

2. Click Nidesoft DVD to Zune Converter component. Load your DVD by clicking 'Open DVD' button or choosing 'Open DVD' from 'File' drop down menu. Several titles appear in the list after loading DVD.

3. As showed by the dialog box below, by clicking before the DVD title or ‘Expand’ button, you can expand the title tree and choose the titles or chapters you want to convert. And also you can preview the chapters in the preview window on the right top to find the chapters you like. Just highlight an item, and then press to play it. All the buttons are available.

4. Select the target output format: In ‘Profile Setting’, you can choose the format you want to convert your files to. And all the target formats are shown in the dropdown list.

5. After selecting certain output format, the right panel will show general standard of the format. You may specify it or just keep the default settings. Select the audio track, subtitle in the main interface for the highlight chapters.

6. Select the output folder by clicking the ‘Browse’ button or directly enter a path in ‘Output Folder’ box. The "C:\temp" is set as the default output folder. Then, click ‘convert’, your converting process begins.
