Analysts, report suggest that Microsoft could announce a price drop this week in response to Sony's Playstation 3 price reduction.
Several analysts, as well as a new report released on Monday are suggestint that a cheaper Xbox 360 could be announced as early as this week on the heels of Sony's PS3 price reduction to US$499.
"We have a bunch of different projects that cost reduce and improve quality as you find issues," said Xbox president Peter Moore when asked about the Falcon chip. "Once you get millions [of consoles] in the field, you learn about the box under all kinds of different circumstances, you can adjust and tweak what you do accordingly."
Analyst Micheal Pachter said on Monday that Microsoft will, in fact, reduce the price of the Xbox 360 tomorrow at the start of the company's E3 press briefing. He believes the $299 Core will drop to $249; the $399 Premium to drop to $349; and the newly released $479 Elite to drop to $399 in response to lower-than-expected sales of all three systems.

No Xbox 360 Price Reduction for Now
Rumors of an Xbox 360 price cut have been flying around like laser shots on an alien battlefield. But Microsoft cut down those rumors on Tuesday night at the company's E3 press briefing, held in a high school auditorium in Santa Monica, California.
Since Sony had cut $100 earlier this week from its 60-GB PlayStation 3 (PS3), expectation was running high that Microsoft would drop the price on the Xbox. In fact, analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities had predicted such a cut on Monday. He told investors that "Microsoft is all but compelled to cut prices, and we think the price cuts will come no later than at Microsoft's Tuesday night press conference."
But at that press briefing the day before the opening of the highly visible E3 gaming trade show, Microsoft Game Studios' Shane Kim told reporters that the company didn't feel "any pressure or any need" to respond to Sony reducing the PlayStation 3 price.

Microsoft Slahes Xbox 360 Price, Offers New Editions
Microsoft is readying its Xbox 360 video game console for the holiday shopping frenzy with new titles -- and a price cut.
On Monday, Microsoft announced it would slash the price of its Xbox 360 by $50. The console now retails for $349.99 with a 20-GB hard drive, wireless controller, Xbox 360 headset, and other standard accessories. What's more, Electronic Arts will release its blockbuster video game title "Madden NFL 08" on August 14.
"The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360," Mitch Koch, corporate vice president in the entertainment and devices division at Microsoft, said in a statement.

Price drop is great however it does not come with a HDD. New games require that the system have a HDD so beware.

That is completely NOT true. MS still requires games to be playable on all systems, regardless of HDD or when the game was made.

I know he's an idiot spammer. That doesn't mean I should leave misinformation unaddressed. Especially when my JOB wants me to know what MS requires in their games.
