So I downloaded Kazaa and all H*** broke lose in the virus department. It seemed like I got a new one every time I connected. I had to reboot the system to clear em all off. How do I stop this?

I agree. You don't "just get a virus". If you got a virus from fasttrack, that means you downloaded a file that contained the virus/worm or whatever. It is your fault. You can't get a virus just by opening or "downloading Kazaa".

"It seemed like I got a new one every time I connected."

Or maybe you've been dowloading files THAT CONTAIN A VIRUS!! You ultimately control what you download. So be aware of what you are doing, have a virus scanner, and maybe even use sig2dat as well so you get verified files(still scan them with virus scanner).

Whats sig2dat?

How do I avoid "Clicking on Crap." If a file says "Scrubs 204," Is that crap? How about "Master of Orion.exe"? Who's to know?

I only downloaded a handful of files and I got at least 5 different viruses. At first they were worms, then worse. I think i got the viruses by leaving .exe files in my shared folder that weren't marked read only. Could this be the case? Anyone out there have a similar history? Please help me out. I just want to watch Scrubs in Europe!

you had to reboot the system? or do you mean you had to reformat and reinstall the system, simply rebooting will do nothing to get rid of a virus, and would mean you most likely dont have a virus or it is still there

heres a thought, could you possibly have seen the built in anti virus downloading a definition with for a specific virus?

it would help some to know the version of kazaa, types of downloaded files, if you have anit virus, if you rebooted or reformated, and anything else you could tell us about your situation (what kind of net connection, do you have a firewall, router......)

then we might get somewhere

(sorry, didnt see that last post)
NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER CLICK ON AN EXECUTIBLE FILE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS FROM A VERY TRUSTED SOURCE (like a good friend)

right there is almost certainly the source of the virus's, you cant get a virus from a movie, so make sure the file extension is correct

"Even downloading a virus does NOTHING.

You still have to run it for it to do anything to you.

They dont just go off on their own after you download it."

Not completely true but most of the time it is.

Simple wongo use some common sense. Don't play downloads until you scan them for viruses. Also beware of files with exe or vbs extensions. Also if it's a full movie or television show then the file size will be large so don't download it if it is a small file. Also consider using networks like Edonkey to download. Edonkey is a lot slower at times but most of the time the files are legit. You can check out sites that post Donkey links like Share Reactor (www.sharereactor.com) or File Nexus (www.filenexus.com) which will help you a lot. Also for sig2dat info try http://www.fasttrackmovies.com which will provide a wealth of information about sig2dat and how to dl real movie and tv show files. Hope that helps. Good Luck:cross

:mellow I know some people wont like this, as they dont like Norton. If you have norton on your comp, just turn on realtime scanning. That way if you open a exe that is a virus you have a chance. The problem with this is that if you dont have a fairly fast machine you can slow things up. Also norton is bloated and slows things down. Good sharing, and good luck.

Thanks for your help. I found the sig2dat website and I understand how that works now.

To satisfy the system req's question - I'm on win98 and I think that I had Kazaa 2.0. I restored my machine to its original settings which I'd been thinking about doing for a while. The viruses just kept hanging around before I did that, which drove me to the restore procedure. I had downloaded a few TV shows, 2 or 3 songs, 2 games (.exe files), and I think a picture of Daisy Fuentes with lusty eyes GRRRR. Things got really slow after that and eventually Norton wouldn't run anymore (I have an old version that has no firewall protection that I know of just virus scan and repair). So I restored and now I am wondering if its safe to go back into the water?

Is it dangerous to leave .exe files in the 'shared' folder?

OH and whas a .vbs file? Usually?

:devil Vbs stands for Visual Basic which is what a number of viruses are written in

i used to run norton 2002 with real time scan on my 233 running winxp PRO, that thing flew, i really dont think that comprehensive scanning is that much of a hog, at least with the latest norton editions

as for your question, umm, have you updated your virus deffinitions? that will help you a lot, and if you have an older version that cant update anymore, go to the verifieds section at www.k-lite.tk , there should be norton 2003 anti-virus in the programs area, the sig2dat system is almost fool proof, so you shouldnt have to worry too much if you use that to get norton or any other file

watch out with the pics, make sure you very carefully look at the extensions, sometimes you will get songtitle-artistname.mp3.vbs, this is almost deffinately a virus

leaving exe files in your shared folder shouldnt make a difference, but deffinately do some virus scanning, if you dont like norton or it doesnt work, get the bulldog antivirus (it should be included in kazaa, just enable it in the options menu)

I'm no expert on visual basic, but VB is still required to run a lot of programs, by deleting wscript, arent you disabling VB?

please correct me if im wrong, but that sounds like a drastic and dangerous move

So lets pretend that i want to disable script. Will deleting wscript do that or is disabling a separate operation?

Dealie do you have your system set up this way?

Go look at your file types. see what .vbs runs with.

Anything else use that? Nope.

Aint run into a problem yet. and wscript has been gone for a long long time now.

(Actually mine is just renamed to something else.. in case i ever need it.. but its been years... so... lol)

LOL @ all of the above

ty for letting me know, like i said, i dont know much about VB, but i think renaming is a better alternative to deleting

:shy Hey phalkon30, I have had no problems with speed, but some people might see a difference so it was just a disclamer.
This old machine works just fine with it on.Later.

Bottom line here is YOU are responsible for what happens to your computer when YOU download something.

You won't get a virus by simply

A. Connecting to Fasttrack

B. Searching Fasttrack.

You might get a virus if you download a file and do not check it with a virus scanner.(usually .exe files are the culprit, but it could be other types to).

But even virus scanners arent' 100% fool proof. You just have to use your best judgement. I've been using Fasttrack for a long time, I only downloaded one virus. I never executed the .exe file. I scanned it first and found the virus. I got rid of the virus no problem. Using descretion is the key.

The guy i was talkin to got what i was sayin. Mission acomplished. Anything else doesnt matter. We didnt need foreverweenie and his stupid comment at all. lol

I think we all noticed that too.

And. I'm the one that deletes my post(s)

No need to leave it around after it served its purpose. I'm not post whore.. I dont give a crap how many posts it says i have.

And that way i get a good laugh when some fool like foreverprick says i must be a stupid newbie because i only have 10 posts. its happned several times now too. lol Just proves they are stupid and dont actually READ anything before they put their 2 cents in.

Listen Dealie,

in a free world i can act in any way. I never called you a *@#*$ or ever said anything diragitory about you or your posts, I would apprishiate the same. The only reason i give you a hard time is that 80% of your post have said that Kazza is the best and everything else sucks. then the rest (exsept the past few that have been helpfull) has said something to the effect that something the person is useing\has sucks. Everyone is different......

Signing off......have a good life.

BTW - Saying "we" dont need him, you have been here a week, you may not be a newbie in life, but you are a newbie here.
