What could be the cause of thin, pink lines (and now blue) on a laptop monitor screen?

It's my friend's computer and it runs XP if that matters. Originally there was one (or two) very thin pink lines on the screen and that has turned into more.

Is the monitor about to die or what? Maybe the video card or video memory? Or is there a way they can stop and/or reverse this?

Is your friend's laptop still under warranty? Seems like the monitor will die soon, he/she should have it check!

How is the cooling on the laptop? That may be the problem, or, it could be a row of stuck pixels, which JScreenFix (http://www.jscreenfix.com/)usually can fix.

Google to see if it is a common fault with the paticular type of laptop.

For example there is a known issue with the screens of Dell INSPIRON 9200 / 9300 / XPS M170 / XPS GEN2 laptops
