i have been going through the audio video forums....lots of people seem to hav some difficulty with modification of avi file...i wud really suggest AviRecomp...
The program allows you to recompress your AVI files...it supports even AVIs without any audio....The installation pack contains all required components (the newest versions of: VirtualDubMod, AviSynth and XviD)...you can add black borders to your movie and place your subtitles on them.....it also supports lots of subtitle formats....u can wirte the subs on to the avi file....really useful if u get a movie from the net without subtitles and want to load it onto ur portable(as the portable wont be able to play the subtitles externally)...just download subtitles and write them onto the avi file....enjoy....
AviRecomp's homepage

Thanks for the info, I was just talking last night about finding a program for adding subtiles. Can you download subtitles easily, or are they somewhat rare?

u can get most of the subtitles at www.opensubtitles.org or www.divxsubtitles.net
download them and attach them when u are about to write them onto the the avi file...really easy...

ya it is quite user friendly....it acts as a link between the programs that come along with the installation and its just a matter of a few clicks and ur new avi file is ready.....

I think this software (http://www.dvd-video-converters.com/videoconverter/avs-video-editor.html)is the most powerful to edit video

This is just the tool I need, but the set up files I am downloading seem to be corrupted and I can't install. I need a free tool to convert .avi to .wmv or any other compressed format.

I think Arcsoft Showbiz is one of the best and stable video editing software out there. Its what I used to make Krell Fiction and my other projects too. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3746175163900275192&hl=en
