ok ive had emule for ages and it sucks it takes weeks just to download a tv show or to even start downloading but i upload all the time i can download at 52kb/s and upload 12kb/s and my ratio is 3.56 i always upload at the max but i can't even download at the speed i can upload at so i just want to know if its just me or what utorrent works great i can download stuff at the same speed i can upload at and if i put a popular thing in like lost it downloads at 52 all the time till its done then i just upload it back and my ratio is fine in my opion emule sucks

ok, for some people emule is fine, but however i beleive that it is ol schol tech now. utorrent, configured properly, can get some really fast download speeds, but you have to be on a private tracker to get those speeds. i frequently max out my connection on oink all the time. you just have to configure utorrent till you get the green checkmark, there are guides and such etc. then try and get an oink invite for music or search for toher sites as well and youll find whatever ya want.

My guess is that you have a low ID.

Learn how to forward your ports correctly (to get a high ID) and connect to a populated server such as "Donkey Server #1"

You should see your speeds pick up.

ok, for some people emule is fine, but however i beleive that it is ol schol tech now. There are some uber rare files on emule, that still aren't on some torrents sites, (OiNK included). (Marta Gómez and Carmen Gomes spring to mind).

well, i wasnt saying anything regarding to the content of the stuff, or how rare it was, but that for the most part, newer technologys are taking emule over. bittorent why i like it is because i frequently max out my connection i can dowload a whole tv season or dvd iso in about 2 or 3 hours with utorrent. im not saying emule is bad, more that is is a older , most of the time slower than bittorrent now as a whole.

Well with BitTorrent growing so fast, it has really taken over as the primary source for file sharing. But you have to appreciate the eDonkey network as an entirely different system for file sharing. ED2K was developed during the "dark ages" of P2P, if you will, when the common user really had no motive to share.

Private trackers are the solution to the leech problem in the modern file sharing world, but ED2K was the temporary solution during a time of KaZaA/WinMX/InsertRandomClientHere junkies. If you spend a lot of time on ED2K you will notice that the more you share, the faster you download - you slowly make your way up the food chain, gaining higher priority on the people you are downloading from.

Really, with new developments in P2P, ED2K is becoming less and less viable for everyday sharing. However, I personally still keep it around because there are some excellent rare files on the network. It only "sucks" if you're a leech, but BitTorrent is still much easier (and nicer) to jump into even for dedicated sharers. It's the natural progression of old to new - but just because it's older doesn't mean it is bad. ;)

heh, thats a great explanation, i must say i stand corrected. i guess i really never got into the whole network long enough to get a decent speed... i agree though with everything thats new isnt always better, i use utorrent 1.6, not the betas. windows xp and will for years to come, and nero 6 on one of my old computers because nero 7 is bloatware (although i do have nero 7 lite which a third party stripped down and made it so much barebones and running so much less memory.

They are built for different purposes. Think of eMule/eDonkey network for as a "massive storage system" with easy searches, but not an efficient distribution systems like Usenet or BitTorrent purpose. Each system has its advantages, so as tools it will depends on what you need. eMule/eDonkey is still the best for its purpose, if you care about sharing most then it would still be the tool you use most often! :)

eMule requires patience; it doesn't have the kinds of speeds that bittorrent clients do but it has one of the most extensive file libraries I have ever seen if I really want something I will wait the length of time to get it. It just makes me want it more. After being configured properly just minimize eMule to the toolbar or hide it all together (as some mods and more recent versions allow) and just let it do it's work. I usually leave mine on overnight and it gets the job done.

Btw I'm using eMule 0.47c Magic Angel v2.3 (My favorite mod and there has not been a 0.48a upgrade for it yet)

If you manage to forward your ports you should be getting better speeds because you will be High ID meaning you can get on better servers.
Another thing is just like in torrents, people will be able to connect to you.

Emule basically can be good for stuff you cannot find in torrents. IMO the problem with emule network is that files with many 'seeds' are easy to find from torrents anyway (and torrents are faster) and rare stuff is usually very very slow. Thus, I hardly ever use emule nowadays, torrents are much better for me.

In my opinion eMule is the best network based P2P. Everyone I know uses LimeWire which sucks.
