What would you say is your favorite first person shooter to play online? I like doom 3, quake 4, medal of honor, battlefield vietnam, soldier of fortune 2, and a few others but what about you?

soldier of fortune 2 is old but its still the best one ever. I play alot of Call of Duty but its not that great IMO. I love some of the levels but the aiming in that game is fucked up.

Halo2 for PC has been fun for me recently. But many in that game have found out that if you plug a 360 controller into the PC, you can auto-aim. Really hasn't made it fun after that.

Besides that, all I've played lately is Counter-Strike. Uncontested as the most popular, and in 2 flavors (source and 1.6.)

I also enjoyed Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield 2, and years ago - CoD 1 and 2. Wolfenstein ET is good as well, although I tend to like graphics and I recently hopped in game and could barely tell what was going on due to old graphics (since I was used to the battlefield series.)

Yeah. :/

It isn't horrible if you can get a decent frame rate with the graphic settings high. I'm stuck on a crap board w/ no AGP or PCI-E slots. I have an ATI radeon 9250 PCI version... meh.

Quake Wars: Enemy Territory will be coming out real soon. There is also a rumor of RTCW2.

I like Wolf:ET because it is fast, furious... and objective based. That, and I like the ability to tweak your interface and such.

Other free FPS: Open Arena, Alien Arena 2007, America's Army, and F.E.A.R. Combat (multiplayer only).

Haven't tried fear... it's a 6 gig download. I should give it a go, but since I am in a clan on ET, the game is only half the reason I play.

very nice I will try a few of the games you all have said!!!! What about the goriest games? you know there is the old school turok games then soldier of fortune 2 and even doom and quake. But what is really good for the gore are they taking gore out of games now because of stuff like Columbine? I think that the fragging addiction needs to be surrounded by blood. Well of course half-life is pretty bloody but still not good enough it is getting kind of old!

What is RTCW2? You know there are alot of games coming out speeking of gore like gta for the ps3, and starcraft 2 (which will have blood and gore) and a new turok, and of course halo 3.... I think all of those have great multiplayer potential

RCTW = Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Originally ET was going to be an expansion pack for the RCTW multiplayer, but when they finished it, they decided to release it for free.

It's an old FPS game... but it had a good amount of popularity with Quake fans because it was based on the Quake 3 engine.

Unreal Tournament, hands down, is the best FPS series ever.

Unreal Tournament: GOTY is from 1999 and I still play it with friends, and it is fun as hell.
Unreal Tournament 2004 adds vehicles, different weapons, new gametypes, awesome maps, and is fun as hell.
Unreal Tournament 3 is coming out ... is DirectX 10 compatible, has a more advanced physics engine, has way more vehicles, sick graphics, and I can hardly wait for it.

I wonder if that will make use of the seemingly already-defunct phys-x cards. They seemed to fade into obscurity as quickly as they came out.

I'm hoping they come out with RTCW2. That would be awesome. RTCW was the first FPS multiplayer I ever played, about 6-7 years ago I think. No doubt helped kick off the many WWII series games.

cs 1.5 was the best by far! 1.6 was crap. the whole steam thing ruined counter-strike, although it did keep h4x0rs at bay somewhat. source is pretty cool but its easy to lose interest. techno + counter-strike for the win, will keep you busy for days.

People people people! Go download SOF2, there is a working version out there you can play online. Just get the seperate file that has the crack generator because the other version key is banned. Then come back here and tellm everyone what the best online FPS really is. Its no contest. Graphics do not make the best game the best, its all about the game play and the balanced weapons.

You have to try Quake 2 with OSP-mod, or Quake 3 with CPMA-mod.
Those are what I call real online FPS.
And for who didn't know, you can strafe jump with Quake, wich makes it a really awesome game to master. You can also practice that strafe-jumping and bunny hopping with a Jump-mod.
Before I started with Q2 I played Unreal Tournament (1), wich was really cool too because of the alternate fire, and the really cool levels, and capture the flag amused me too. After that I started playing Instagib with Q2, wich is pretty challenging. (instagib is one hit kills, and you have only one weapon, the railgun).
Then came UT2003 or 2004 dont know, with the Onslaught mode, wich is awesome too.
Now I have RSI from too much gaming :)

Which is why I play ET.

Good user base, Q3 engine based, so the trick jumping is involved, and the play is objective based rather than just a frag fest, though stats are tracked so fraggers can have their bragging rights.

There are also a few trick jump servers out there so you can practice that if it's your thing.

Last FPS game that I really enjoyed was Perfect Dark. I know its old, but hear me out. No games (to my knowledge) have the sim options like perfect dark for multi player games. I do not want to rely on having enough friends over, or an online connection, to play a good multi player game. Also, its nice to add in sims even in a big game with your friends, makes it more interesting. I would love to see some newer fps games intergrate sims into their multi player mode, and stop relying on having a ton of tv's and systems in your house, or an online gaming system.

I'm still in a Clan for it. I play mostly when I catch friends on through Xfire. Get Xfire, PM me your username, and I'll add you. Then we can frag some face.

You might also check out a newer FPS called Combat Arms. Another free one, very Counterstrike-ish.

You might want to make sure you download the ET 2.60 patch, and the 2.60b binaries patch.

If you dig enough to play, I'll hook you up w/ our clan forums address and we'll see about getting you some tags.
