150 Mbit Cable to hit US in 2 years

Don't know if this has been posted here yet, but I haven't seen a similar post so here goes:

"At the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) annual conference in Vegas Wednesday, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said his company plans to roll out a new cable modem that delivers 150 megabits per second (Mbps) of bandwidth. That's about 25 times the speed that today's cable modems can do."

Supposedly this should be available within about two years, and by that time Verizon and their FiOS service will likely be up to that speed anyway.

Most likely not. But the article does mention that the Comcast dude said the actual cable modem would have a comparable price to today's cable modem's (which would cut down on some of the costs.)

As for a monthly fee, all internet services start out expensive. I remember when we paid $75/month for a 1.5 Mbit/128 Kbit DSL connection. Today, we have 6 Mbit/768 Kbit and its $35/month. Not a big improvement, but nonetheless many times faster and for less than half the price of a few years back.

I figure by the time this technology comes out, Verizon's FiOS fiberoptics pricing will have come down to DSL pricing range, and thus comcast will have to discount to compete. I'm sure they'll lose mass amounts of money in the beginning (like verizon) but in the end will most likely make huge profits.

In 2 years my butt! (nice avatar hawkburn) Charter can't get us 10Mbits here yet, how are they going to get 150Mbits to me in 2 years? I'll be lucky to have 10Mbits in 2 years.

Damn ... i sitting on a 100Mbit fibre optic line right now ... ÚS$35/month . Hoping for a
1GB connection in 2 years time :)

Yeah i don't know about 2 years. Maybe there trying to keep people from switching to fiber but but i already switched

Yep no doubt Jorge. By that time I'm sure we'll be talking about 1 gigabit into our homes by 2011. :icon_thum Tech moves so fast now that the law that basically governs technology (forgot the name of it) could possibly be surpassed.

In the UK, only 24mbit through phone line ADSL2+, and a trial of 50mbit through cable. How come America has advanced stuff? Like the stealth planes and robot machine guns? That's because the USA is a technological wonder. Ever hear of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh? They are founding fathers and leaders in high tech. CERT is here also, the computer emergency team. I have to agree that the USA is paranoid about some things.

wow I guess that means Verizon FIOS definitely has some competition. I have a relatively slow connection 10mbs/2mbs.
